2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS convertible 6-speed manual

The Chevrolet Camaro is GM’s remaining entry in the pony car stable.  Pontiac was cancelled altogether in 2009 (a limited number of 2010s were built) so its cousin, the Firebird, was not produced when the platform returned for the 2010 model year.  So, while this Camaro is the second model year following the General’s seven model year hiatus from the muscle car segment, it is the first year of the convertible’s return as 2010 production was coupes only.  This is likely a factor in 2011 being the most brisk year in terms of unit sales for the fifth generation Camaro.

Rally yellow paint is an eye-catcher, the dual black stripes a reminder of the late 1960’s heritage of this model.  Further contrast is provided in the form of a black power convertible soft top, grey interior and chrome five-spoke original wheels.  The “fifth gen” Camaro checks in with a 112-inch wheelbase and the six-speed manual transmission sends the power from the V8 up front to the rear wheels.  It was manufactured at GM’s Oshawa Car Assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario.

This SS boasts a 6.2L LS3 V8 engine.  Output from the factory was a prodigious 426 horsepower at 5,900 RPM and 420 lb.-ft. or torque at 4,600 RPM.  The manual transmissions have higher power ratings than the automatics of this generation.  Zero-to-sixty jaunts were made in 4.6 seconds and the quarter-mile could be had in 13 flat.

Underneath, there is a fully independent four-wheel suspension while traction control is provided by GM’s Stabilitrak system.  ABS is in the form of four-wheel disc brakes supplemented by four-piston Brembo calipers.  Power steering comes with variable assist and other goodies include competitive/sport modes as well as launch control to get all of that power from rubber to road.

Exterior features we notice include the trademark Chev two-slat grille, separated by the front bumper cover.  There is a further intake above the grille and the hood juts upward to enable air flow underneath to feed the 6.2.  Fog lights, fender badging and the chrome wheels make for a tidy cosmetic package.  Out back the spoiler, dual pipes and SS badge complete the look.

Inside, the front buckets have meaty bolsters to provide support when hugging the corners.  Modern conveniences include air conditioning, AM/FM/CD head unit with phone connectivity and AUX input connected to Boston Acoustics speakers as well as power group.  The three-spoke steering wheel in addition to the leather-covered shift knob add to the sporty look.  We also note generous cup holders.  White stitching on the dark surfaces achieves the theme.
