2000 Honda S2000 Roadster 6-speed manual

This 2000 Honda S2000 Roadster is a first-year example described as bone-stock by the seller.  The model year and 2000 cc (rounded from 1997 cc) remain an interesting combination in coming up with the model name.  While the seller acknowledges two current flaws, one a touched-up scratch on the lower front lip as photographed, he pledges that both will be resolved by the time of sale at the price asked.  The other is a blemish on the windshield.

This model, internally coded AP1 within Honda, was built with a 2.0 Litre inline four-cylinder engine that produced 240 horsepower when new.  This ratio of power to displacement is impressive today, almost unheard of at the time the S2K was released by Honda.  The redline on the engine is an eyebrow-raising 8,800 rpm.  The task of getting the 240 ponies to the rear wheels only is assigned to a 6-speed manual transmission, supported by a limited-slip differential.

The 16-inch wheels in place are as outfitted by the factory.  They are a staggered setup, with 205/55 tires up front, 225/50 in the rear.  Also from the handling department, the S2000 features an independent double-wishbone suspension and possesses a 50:50 F/R weight distribution attributable to the entire engine being mounted aft of the front axle.

The S2000 is a two-seater, and a compact package.  Overall length is 163 inches, height is a mere 50 inches, with the convertible power soft-top in its up position.  Grey paint looks to be in very presentable condition; a nice parting shot is the trunk-mounted colour-coded rear spoiler.  The black top and black leather interior provide contrast to the cosmetic presentation.

The engine compartment looks quite clean, consistent with expectation for a 45,000 km car.  The red section of the valve cover provides a colour complement to the car’s shades to those collectors who like to do their own wrenching.  Photos of the engine bay do support seller’s assertion that the car currently sits in stock form.  Many details look new or almost new:  bolts on shock towers, air filter cover, supple hoses, corrosion-free clips and bolts, battery bracket and a/c valve.

Inside the black leather presents well and the digital dash is a bellwether of early-2000s Honda styling.  Gauges on the main cluster are straightforward:  tachometer in a bar-graph layout, digital figures for speedometer and electronic temperature and fuel gauges.  Other controls stray from Honda standard of the day to indicate this as a flagship model.  Seat bolsters and rubber-accented metal pedals – all three – show off the sporting intentions.  Leather on the driver’s seat shows some expected creasing but is otherwise in exceptional cosmetic condition for its 21 years.
