1982 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL

This 1982 Mercedes-Benz is finished in yellow with a brown leather interior.  Being a 380 SL, it is outfitted with a smaller V8 than its big brother the 560SL, also a R107 body, but a V8 nonetheless.  The smaller V8-engined 380SL was sold from 1981- 1985.  The 3.8 supplied 155 horsepower and 196 lb.-ft. of torque when new; this output is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.  Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection is also part of the power package.

The odometer on this example reads 69,087 miles.  Between that mention in the ad copy and the MPH speedometer, we appear to have a US-market specimen here.  The R107 was marketed by Mercedes as a “personal luxury car” and had a much longer than average production run.  They were produced from 1971 – 1989, in North America sales begain in 1972.

SLs came with a removable hardtop, many of which disappeared over the years.  The hardtop for this car is included in the sale.  Interestingly, it is mounted for all of the photos, the seller must not have heard the old car lot adage “when the top goes down, the price goes up”.  SLs in the 1980s are 8 inches longer than their earliest predecessors, attributable to the deeper bumpers put in place to comply with the US NHTSA’s 5 mph bumper law.

This car offers all of the modern conveniences of the day.  Power windows, locks and antenna are among the features.  Cruise control and air conditioning are also on the check sheet.  The brown perforated leather provides a rich accent to the yellow paint and appears to be in very presentable condition.  The same can be said of the rich wood interior accents, incorporated into which is an aftermarket Kenwood AM/FM/CD head unit.

Cosmetic modifications include dark pinstriping to contrast the paint and chrome-finished wheels.  There is also a retrofitted centre-mounted brake light, not installed by Mercedes-Benz until ’86 models, incidentally the model year after the 380SL disappeared from dealer showrooms.  Although some might argue that these are somewhat outmoded, each is fairly easily reversible.  Factory tire size for the wheels was 205/70R15, in a V-speed rating.
