2021 07 25 CCC Featured External Listing 1979 Porsche 911 SC Targa 5-speed manual
Here is an air-cooled late ‘70s 911 wearing a set of the Fuchs wheels of the same design as those currently on live auction here. Like every 911, it sports a flat six-cylinder engine mounted in the rear. The odometer reads 164,000 km. It being a pre-1998 model, it is air-cooled and, being a normally aspirated A.C. engine, necessarily rear wheel drive. The SC engine is a 3.0 litre aluminum number, good for 180 horsepower when new. The move away from magnesium to aluminum was in the interest of retaining strength of the casing.

The SC, which stands for Super Carrera, is a narrow-bodied car. The introduction of the ’78 model was the first time Porsche had used the SC designation since the 356, which ceased production in 1965. Fans of the marque will notice how the fenders do not flare out on this car to the further extremes of wide bodies, particularly in the rear. Another interesting period note for this car, introduced the same model year as the first Porsche 928, is that its sales were too strong for the Porsche brain trust to follow through with the plan to replace 911 with 928.

This car is a Targa, which implies fixed rear window with a removable roof panel. Though modern Targas are more “user-friendly” (purists might say less sporting) this panel is removed by unfastening latches and removing manually to enjoy open-air motoring.

The seller mentions much mechanical work but reading between the lines of the write-up reveals that although not much mileage has been driven since the work, most including the engine refurbishment was done over eight years ago.

The engine refurb. consisted of work on valves, guides, heads, rings and bearings. The suspension has been lowered to the height of a European-market car, a common modification for North American market cars. In fact, the stock height for N.A. cars makes them look artificially high to many. In lowering the ride height, these components were installed: Koni Sport adjustable shocks, larger torsion bars, Elephant Racing front bearings (bronze) and 930 tie-rods.

On the outside of the car a new Targa seal has been installed. Though likely a fair weather only car, this is worthwhile if only for when the car is being washed. Calipers have been painted and cross-drilled rotors are in place. Inside, Yonaka sport seats have been swapped in, along with Sparco pedals as well as shift knob and steering wheel by Momo.

Our favourite parts of the photos are the Fuchs wheels (of course!), the underneath and engine bay. The non-spoiler looks adds to the pure appearance of this SC. Inside, it looks like a forty-year-old Porsche – spartan and functional. We are not sure about the white floor mats!
