2021 08 07 CCC Featured External Listing 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 4-speed manual

Here is an example of the storied 1963 Chevrolet Corvette “SWC” – Split Window Coupe.  This 1963 is the first year of the second generation of Corvette and the beginning of the famed Stingray name.  Consistent with the spine of a stingray, the centre of the rear window is closed with two separate panes of glass.

Legend has it that when the safety folks at General Motors first laid eyes on the design, they canned it as soon as they could.  They feared that rearward visibility was too restricted because of the split.  That the SWC only appeared as a 1963 model ensured years later that the ’63 coupe would be one of the most collectible Corvettes – which is saying something.  It is an interesting historical anecdote that over half of ’63 Corvettes particularly, and C2s through the run, were convertibles and not nearly as well-known as their SWC brethren.

Although the ’63 is the start of the C2, it is worth noting that the C2 taillights were used on the last C1s in 1962.  The result is hybrid of a different sort than we are used to in modern time, also a collectable.

The car at hand has been fully restored.  Its repaint in light blue remains true to the original colour – preferable for most collectors when a car has been resprayed.  The black leather seats provide a smart colour complement.

This ‘vette is a 300-horsepower car, featuring a small block 327 cubic-inch V8 engine.  All ‘63s came with the 327 set-up, 427s coming later, though there were four varieties.  The base produced 250 horsepower so this example is a step up from that.

This car is well-optioned.  Leather seats, power windows are found on the inside.  Mechanically, it features power brakes, discs up front.  The 4-speed completes the package.  We also like the rare cast aluminum knock-off wheels and whitewall tires – try THAT on a modern sports car!
