This is a 2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom VII, the “VII” denoting this generation of the model which hit the market for the 2003 model year. The name Phantom is recognized by Rolls-Royce purists as one of its most famous, first hitting the streets in 1925. It has not been made in every consecutive year since but definitely in the majority. Perusing the photos of this car – inside and out – one can see the inspiration of the cars we currently have on auction – a 1971 Corniche Drop-Head Coupe and a 1974 Silver Shadow LWB Saloon. These two traditional models have had a noticeable influence.
This seventh generation of the Phantom was the first Rolls to be developed after the deal which saw BMW buy the rights to the Rolls-Royce name in 1998. The VII was released for the 2003 model year. At that time, it was the only Rolls-Royce model being produced. This lasted until, coincidentally, the 2010 model year release of the Ghost, making this car the last of the run where Phantom was the only nameplate in production by R-R.
This car is finished in a traditional silver on black colour scheme. It is a US-market car, having been imported to Canada in 2011. While the analog speedometer is MPH-dominant, the digital odometer can be read in kilometres. Current reading is just under 19,000 km. There is a chrome package in place and it helps the car really pop. One could make the case that the Corniche Drop-Head Coupe and Silver Shadow LWB Saloon currently being auctioned possess a hint of modesty, no one would make such an accusation for this Phantom – especially considering those rear coach doors.
The powertrain of this Phantom features a 6.75 litre V12 – same displacement as the V8 Corniche and Silver Shadow. A Series I Phantom VII, the power gets to the rear wheels only via a 6-speed automatic. While the Corniche and Silver Shadow weigh in substantially in the upper range of the 4,000s, this motorcar has a curb weight of over 5,600 pounds
Black leather interior features the expected extensive wood and chrome. Original umbrellas included in rear seat dedicated stowage spots remain in place, a strong show of provenance, and the seller mentions that they have never been used. Seller claims that while there are some scuffs visible on the rear bumper, the interior is perfect. (Bring your most meticulous friend to a showing!)
Sadly, this car was involved in a collision with a city bus in Vancouver while parked. So, the Carfax would not be clean. Total damage was $25,000, though we take this with a grain of salt, expecting both parts and labour on this Rolls through the dealer would have been pricier than a scraped Camry. We do gain some peace of mind that the seller has disclosed this for all to know.
