1,212 km 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Roadster
Mercedes-Benz holds a prominent position in the history of the automobile. Among the more prominent of the prominent remains the late-1950s Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. The SLS (German: Super Leicht Sport, translated: Super Light Sport) was inspired by the Gullwing, though this Roadster example observes a less obvious lineage. Being a convertible, it does not enjoy the dramatic gullwing doors, hinged to the roof. The AMG portion of the name also carries some legend. AMG began as an independent company dedicated to squeezing more performance out of this one of two storied Stuttgart manufacturers (the other being Porsche). Greybeards among the Collector Car Canada membership will remember “The Hammer” a mid-1980s Mercedes-Benz W124 (E-class), juiced up by AMG to squeeze out more power and performance. Long story short, Mercedes could not deny the engineering at AMG, liked it so much that it bought the company.

The SLS is the first car produced from concept to the road by AMG, which is run semi-independently from the rest of the big machine that is Mercedes. This beast is powered by a 6.2 litre V8 producing 583 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. or torque sent to the rear wheels only by a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Even six years later, one might find it hard to fathom that this much power is not distributed to all four wheels, certainly the way of the world with today’s supercars. It should be noted that there was an all-wheel-drive version of this car, but it was all-electric – which hardly counts given that fewer than 100 were produced. Another note to acknowledge: the AMG GT succeeded the SLS and retained the front-engine, rear-drive layout.

The SLS AMG had a run from 2010 through 2015, though the GT was not released until the 2012 model year. Both trim levels, as well as the further juiced Black Series and the Electric Drive, were assembled mostly by hand.

The coupe weighed in at 3,659 pounds (add 88 pounds for this Roadster), not a heavyweight for a supercar but it does call into question the “Super Light” portion of its name. Among those contributing to the realization of this car was none other than retired Formula One driver David Coulthard, who claimed 13 checkered flags in his career and remains a Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador.

Looking at this car, it is difficult to know what to say. Its stance is dramatic, its interior is sublime, its presence is intoxicating. With 1,212 km on the clock, it is almost brand new. The beauty of this car is that it makes a statement without making a statement: it has all of the trademarks of a modern supercar – visibly contrasting brake calipers; weight-saving carbon fibre hood; front and rear bumper sensors; luxurious cabin with more carbon fibre – a far cry from the 280 SL owned by Coulthard and built the day of his 1971 birth; navigation; and others, without going over the top.

Being that this car is a cabrio, a few roof features should not go unmentioned. The roof itself is three-ply, composed of magnesium, steel and aluminum. Not only can it open and close in 11 seconds, Mercedes engineers made it so that this can be accomplished at speeds up to 50 km/h. Compared to many modern convertibles whose tops are electronically prevented from operating without the hand brake engaged, this seems oh, so advanced to us.
