1,000 km 2016 BMW M4 GTS
Since its introduction in 2014, the BMW M4 has been a very special car in its own right. However, this 2016 BMW M4 GTS is considerably more so, one scan of the photos will tell the viewer that this is no ordinary car, not even an ordinary M4. It was introduced as a 2016 model at the 2015 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, a show whose pedigree knows few peers.

A mere 700 units were produced worldwide and of these, only 50 came to Canada. Exclusivity abounds. While the 3.0L twin-turbo is of the same displacement of the rack M4, do not be fooled. The GTS boasts 493 horsepower and 444 lb.-ft. of torque. The increased output is attributable to an innovative nozzle water injection system, the first in the industry in about 20 years. This makes it to the rear wheels only via a 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission.

The powertrain hustles the M4 GTS 0-60 in a mere 3.8 seconds, thanks partly to the loss of 60 pounds compared to the standard M4, while speed tops out at 305 km/h. Weight savings are in evidence in the gallery. We notice carbon fibre in copious quantities: the roof (which also serves to lower the car’s centre of gravity); strut brace; driveshaft; rear wing; and front splitter. BMW Style 758 light weight alloy wheels also contribute. BMW claims that this car can lap the famed Nurburgring track at an astounding 28 fewer seconds than the base M4, again no slouch. Stopping power comes from carbon ceramic brakes.

In addition, the GTS (and Competition) has a revised suspension for better handling. The adaptive M suspension is a nice start, it is supplemented by upgraded dampers, springs and anti-roll bars. With these different specs, BMW also tuned the electronic differential and DSC (a BMW acronym for dynamic stability control).

While the interior remains consistent with the standard M4, nice touches in Alcantara are in place on the arm rest, steering wheel and dash. On the outside, keen observers will notice black chrome exhaust pipes and a higher gloss Shadow Line trim. BMW aficionados will recognize the term Shadow Line as the marque’s trademark for exterior metal trim in black, rather than chrome.

With all of that standard equipment, this car still finds a way to include some add-ons. An impressive feature is the bolt-in roll cage. This car is ready for track days.

And get ready to be noticed. Any M4 owner is used to approvals from other drivers in the form of thumbs-ups. This car takes things to the extreme in the form of the wing, orange-trim on the wheels and base of the splitter and the obvious-from-the-outside orange roll cage. All in all, a tidy package promising peak performance.
