1988 Porsche 944S 5-speed manual
The S (short for Super) trim of the Porsche 944 was offered from 1987 – 1989 and this is an example of the middle year of production. It is a low mileage unit, having rolled 36,000 km since new. The 2.5 litre inline-four-cylinder engine produced 187 horsepower out of the factory. This was an increase of some 30 horsepower from the previous non-S model, attributable to doubling to four valves per cylinder in the double overhead cam set-up. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.

Paint is an understated silver metallic, contrasted by a burgundy leather interior. Inside, the vaunted Porsche sport seats are in place up front, power adjustable and all seats are upholstered in leather. The car features cruise control, a removable sunroof panel with power up-down function when in place, and air conditioning. The original Blaupunkt AM/FM/cassette player remains in place and rubber floor mats protect the matching burgundy carpets.

On the exterior, the famed original Porsche phone dial wheels remain. Pop-up headlights, fog lights and a black-stripped bumper signal trademarks of the pre-S2 normally-aspirated 944 up front while the integrated unpainted rubber spoiler unique to the model is adhered to the base of the rear window.

The engine bay is tidy. The battery cover remains in place, shock tower bolts are clean and spark plug wires look soft and flexy. The 16-valve design is derived from the 32-valve 5.0 litre V8 of the 928S4, introduced a couple of years prior. To show off the technology, a “16-Ventiler” badge was added to fender rub strips and under the hood.

Analog instrumentation includes a fuel gauge, speedometer, odometer in kilometres, trip odometer, oil pressure in BAR and volt-meter. White on black with orange needles reflect the typical Porsche look of the day. Controls for fog lights, dome light and headlights are on switches below. The Blaupunkt RENO SQR 46 head unit in place is an accoutrement that has often been changed out on 944s. The collector set will appreciate, the Concours judges will notice.
