1990 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 Convertible 5-speed manual
Here is one we couldn’t resist profiling, timing is everything. Although the same year as the Mustang currently on auction here, it is a step down in trim (this being an LX, the auction item being a GT). Another big difference are the modifications – this Pony car has many, that on auction has few.

This 1990 is the middle year of the ’87 – ’93 run for the facelifted Fox body Mustang. The pre-facelift version appeared in the 1979 model year. While the ’79 to ’86 was a well-loved and well-respected machine, the Fox body came of age in 1987. While fuel injection began during the pre-facelift run, all ‘87+ 5.0 litre engines were fuel injected. The shape and overall look were cleaner and the move up to 225 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque were a step above. While GT owners love to include “5.0” when describing their cars, it is technically redundant because all GTs were so equipped. With LXs, it is more of a necessity, given that LXs with an anemic 2.3 litre engine producing 90 horsepower was also available.
This burgundy car has been recently repainted. It retains a ‘90s look, if outmoded in the eyes of some, in the form of the polished finish wheels. The black soft-top is a recent replacement. We are not sure why this seller did not publish any photos with the top down, are our seller did. Someone tell him that when the top goes down, the price goes up!
An LX model, it does not sport the extensive exterior appointments the GT got from the factory: eye-catching ground effects package, louvered taillights and front air dam with round fog lights incorporated therein. Still, some are loyal to the LX trim level, though most for the notchback. The notch was the lightest Mustang so, given the same powertrain, it is slightly quicker than the GT trim Mustangs, also even the LX hatchbacks and convertibles.
This car has travelled 175,000 km. There are extensive mechanical mods: BBK headers, flow master exhaust, different throttle body, under-drive pulleys, 3.73 gearing and Eibach springs/suspension. As well, seller mentions that the clutch was recently replaced. Sadly, the engine bay was camera shy on picture day, which is an eyebrow-raiser.
Inside, the seller states that the interior was “re-done” three years ago. There are not a lot of photos but it looks like a well-maintained Fox body interior so we are not sure why the re-do was necessary. One noticeable departure from stock is the Hurst shifter, a little more ostentatious than the factory unit. We believe the arm rest is an aftermarket add-on, black leather seats got dressed up for picture day!
