1962 MG MGA 1600 Mark II Roadster 4-Speed Manual SOLD FOR $19,000
Closes Tuesday, April 28, 2:45 pm ET, possibly subject to Second Chance and Last Chance Systems
Here is a 1962 MG MGA 1600 Mark II Roadster 4-Speed Manual powered by its original 1622 cc engine. It was subjected to a restoration under prior ownership, yielding bright red paint and a black interior with upholstery in black vinyl showing little wear accented by red piping. The soft top, which has not been operated under current ownership – a fair weather car only – and the tonneau cover are also in black vinyl. The 15” chrome wire wheels are removed by knock-off MG-branded hubs and cover front disc brakes; with the wire wheels, the tires have tubes in use. The current owner has been its custodian since 2022, which is matched by the date codes on the tires, installed soon after his acquisition. It comes with a set of side curtains (not installed on photo day/photographed separate from the car in the gallery) and one key.
The chrome trim on the car appears generally free of flaw, without pitting. The red paint shows a strong lustre with one imperfection aft of the driver’s side rear wheel well, demonstrated in the gallery. The car includes a black soft-top as well as a black tonneau cover which snaps on to visible rivets on the body and dash. The tonneau cover has a centre zipper, enabling use while underway without a passenger. This final-year Mk II MGA counts among its exterior features the updated Mark II MGA grille, a driver’s fender-mounted rear-view mirror, two chrome bumperettes on each of the front and rear chrome bumpers and brightwork emblems in correct, original positions.
The 15” knock off wire wheels cover disc brakes in front and drums in the rear. They are lined in Firestone F-560 radial tires, with tubes deployed underneath. A spare tube is in the boot and will come with the car. The Firestones measure 165 R 15 and exhibit a date code of 2022, matching the acquisition of the car by the seller. They have rolled under 5,000 miles since, showing grippy tread and an S speed rating.
The interior has been refreshed. The vinyl upholstery covering the two seats and arm rest shows little wear and is accented by body colour piping. The shifter and seller-installed three-spoke steering wheel are adorned with the MG emblem and make use of wood on the contact surfaces. Switchgear, heater/ventilation controls and SMITHS instrumentation presents well with labels intact and legible. The dash is free of cracks and is the mounting surface for the cabin rear-view mirror. Ignition is by key and pull-knob below the key hole. The boot can accommodate a spare tire and is shown in our gallery both with matching black carpet in and removed.
The SMITHS instrumentation consists of a centrally-mounted 120 MPH speedometer to the right and 7000 RPM tachometer to the left with 6000 RPM redline. These are complemented by a smaller multi-gauge to the right, giving temperature readings for oil and coolant. There is a British Motor Corporation-branded AM radio farther to the right with a single speaker in between. Various dash-mounted switches include ignition, indicators, headlights, panel lights, and wipers as well as knobs for vents.
The 1622-cc inline-four was rated at 90 horsepower from the factory, with a workable power-to-weight ratio, considering the car’s sub-2000-lb. curb weight. It is fed by twin SU carburetors with the power getting to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission and exhales via a single exhaust outlet. The car is equipped with a kill switch intended to preserve the battery during periods of storage. The seller notes that all functions work as designed and adds for Ontario buyers, he expects the car will pass Ontario safety as it sits.
This 1962 MG MGA 1600 Mark II Roadster 4-Speed Manual is available with a set of side curtains and one key from the four-year owner in Cobourg, Ontario.
