1972 Chevrolet Corvette Restored, Modified, Original Numbers Matching
Here is a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette, Restored and Modified that was restored early in the current owner’s 18-year ownership. Work by B&B Corvette of Wasaga Beach consisted of a refinish in the current black as well as a new interior in red. Many receipts for parts from a Corvette specialty supplier are included in our gallery, dated circa 2007 – ‘08. More recently, the numbers-matching engine was rebuilt and stroked in 2022 to displace 383 cubic inches, with a shift kit installed for the 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, rebuilt contemporaneously; again, receipts are included in our gallery. Other equipment includes a Positraction limited slip differential, removable T-Top roof panels, removable rear window, 15” American Racing wheels (original Chevrolet Motor Division Rally wheels included, photographed in American Racing boxes), retractable headlights, power windows, and upgraded stereo with Bluetooth and period look. The Corvette Coupe comes with three sets of keys, a car cover, the removed parts photographed in our gallery as well as – Ontario buyers, please note – an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.
The current black paint was applied as part of the restoration by B&B Corvette under 15,000 miles ago. The car was originally finished in Mille Miglia red, as set out in the data plate still in the driver door jamb, which also sets out a manufacture date of June 1, 1972 (decoded from “K01”). During the restoration the chrome rear bumper was refinished as was the chrome luggage rack. Emblems and chrome trim were also replaced. More recently, the exterior was wet sanded and buffed in 2019. Other exterior appointments include the removable T-Tops, removable rear window, two chrome bumpers, twin front grilles below the bumper, the re-chromed luggage rack, Corvette-trademark quad round taillights, and rectangular-framed dual exhaust outlets. Extra paint in the matching colour code is included and photographed in the gallery.
The staggered 15” American Racing wheels show a bright finish and are skinned in a set of BF Goodrich white-lettered Radial T/A tires. They are sized 225/60 up front and 275/600 in the rear, with an S-speed rating and 2017 date codes. There is also a receipt for the tires in our gallery. Underneath is a set of four-wheel disc brakes. The original 15 x 8 Chevrolet Rally wheels are included; the tires have rolled approximately 1000 miles according to the seller’s estimate.
The red interior is mostly refreshed including seats, carpets, console, arm rest and door cards. Trim code 407 is noted on the data plate in the door jamb, for red. While the dash cover is uncracked and in good condition, it is not as bright as the other red components, showing that it is the original piece. Further appointments include woodgrain trim on the door cards and console, power windows as well as the vintage-look head unit with AM/FM/Bluetooth compatibility complemented by aftermarket speakers aft of the two seats. The air conditioning’s compressor was removed under prior ownership.
The three-spoke black-rimmed steering wheel fronts a 160 MPH speedometer and 7000 RPM tachometer with 5400 RPM red line. The owner believes the indicated 42,000 miles within the speedometer to be original. The steering column features tilt and telescopic functionality while the auto-cancel feature of the turn signals is not currently working as designed. The driver’s side gauges are complemented by another set in the centre stack for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, with a voltmeter. The analog clock in the same location is inoperative.
The 383 Stroker V8 is numbers matching with the increased displacement executed during a 2022 engine rebuild, under 1,000 miles ago. The three-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt at this time, with a shift kit installed, sending power to the rear wheels – estimated at 425 HP by the engine builder. A receipt for the parts installed for these improvements is included in our gallery. Other improvements carried out under current ownership include MSD ignition, MSD distributor, replacement of fuel tank, rear springs improved to composite, replacement of exhaust system including mufflers, headers and brake booster. Intake manifold was replaced and an aluminum radiator has been installed. Ontario buyers, please note – the car will be sold with an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.
