Overview
Up for auction is a freshly restored 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT. The restoration was mostly handled by the owner and was a detailed, painstaking process with no stone left unturned. The sharp black paint job was handled by a professional, as were most of the mechanical details.
And when we say that the restoration is fresh, we mean that the owner has indicated a mere approximately 50 miles on the new engine, which was spec’d by this owner; these specs are shared below. The 1974 model year market the first re-skin of the second generation Camaro, after it replaced the original for 1970. Gone were the “double-dot” tail lights for a more modern look. The Type LT was first released in 1973 – L for Luxury, T for Touring – and made occupant comfort a priority: high-back front bucket seats, extra sound insulation and thicker carpeting were among the creature comforts on offer, though the latter was replaced as part of the restoration.
This Type LT benefits from a frame-off restoration. So the paint job was done the right way and the fresh black paint shines without flaw. The underside was sandblasted and PPG Diamond-Coated paint was applied. The resto was loyal to the factory look of this Camaro as the modifications from original are noticeable but understated. The hood was chosen to accommodate the engine, the black five-spoke mag wheels with chrome lip complement the paint and the removable bow-tie taillight decals reinforce the Chevy name. Chrome bumpers gleam, the new BF Goodrich Radial T/A raised white-letter tires are a period-appropriate choice. Grille, lights and trim all retain a stock look, save for the taillight decals, the rear spoiler is a familiar Camaro complement of the period. New as part of the restoration: tires; wheels; windshield; headlights and surrounding trim; taillights; grille; bumpers re-chromed; window mouldings – chrome and rubber.
The condition of the interior matches the excellent exterior finish and also remains true to original. One modification is probably the most noticeable detail inside, in the form of the B&M metal three-speed performance short shifter with folded-rubber shift boot – form and function in one. High-back black vinyl buckets and the rear bench are in very nice condition, all interior details are intact. Original instrumentation is in place. Beyond the original four-spoke steering wheel, there are a 130 MPH speedometer and a 7000 RPM tachometer with 5000 RPM red line. Other smaller gauges flanking them are the fuel gauge, voltmeter, temperature gauge and clock. Light knob is farther left, lighter if farther right, both with the in-use GM labels of the day. Another non-stock item is the upgraded Nextar head unit with AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, with removable face plate. Other refreshes that this car has been treated to include: new headliner; new door panels; window mechanisms; seat upholstery and padding; dashboard; and dash pad.
One look at the engine bay of this 1974 and it is apparent that the restoration and installation of the 400 horsepower 350 cubic inch crate engine are very recent with only the 50 or so miles noted by the owner. It is fed by an Edelbrock 650 intake manifold. Engine was meticulously spec’d by the owner and these specifications are noted in images included later in the listing, prepared by the owner. With the TH-350 3-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels, this Camaro is as much “go” as it is show. The work was performed by a retired licensed technician. Please do review the spec sheet but details we particularly notice beyond the new, “fresh out of the box” engine are the new transmission; new brakes – front disc system, with rear drums – from master cylinder and power booster to calipers and shoes; all wire harnesses; radiator and fan; all hoses; alternator; pro-track rear end; power steering pump; springs all-around; rear shocks; headers; and exhaust. One of the videos illustrates the roar of this fantastic V8 engine build. Please review the photo gallery, where photos taken during the restoration are featured.
