This 2006 Cadillac DTS is a large and comfortable front-wheel drive luxury sedan. Originating in the first model year of the marque, the DTS name is an acronym for Deville Touring Sedan and replaced the earlier Deville. It proved the end of a long run for Deville – while this generation of car was built through the 2011 model year, the name has not been used since. Deville is synonymous with V8 power and elegance in a large domestic sedan.

This car’s Black Raven finish gives it a sleek look while chrome exterior treatments provide contrast. Matching 17” OEM seven-spoke wheels complement the body’s brightwork. Flush Xenon headlights are reflective of the period, the car also sports cornering lamps, taillights are LED. This car has rear tint – windows on the rear doors and rear of car – in a matching black. Quad exhaust outlets with chromed tips make a subtle suggestion of the car’s V8 power, red calipers also add to the sleek, sporty appearance. The exterior owns a few features that say Cadillac – noteworthy are the indicator lights incorporated into the folding heated side mirrors with auto-dim function, others are the fog lamps, sizable grille as well as front and rear parking sensors. There is tape covering what the owner calls a “small ding, about the size of a two-nie”.

Inside, the luxury is further on display. Power-operated (front) seats are upholstered in leather in a cashmere shade. Lower finishes on the interior are in matching cashmere while the dash and upper door cards match the exterior, in black. Most prominent in the centre stack is a Cadillac-branded analog clock which sits above audio controls, with AM/FM/CD, and the digital-display dual zone climate control unit. Instrumentation is primarily analog, with digital displays for odometer and secondary speedometer. In addition to analog tachometer and speedo, there are also readouts for engine temperature and fuel level. Visors are equipped with vanity lights; door overheads are equipped with handles. Rear view mirror includes a readout for compass.

Under the hood, the venerable GM Northstar V8 engine displaces 4.6 litres. The 32-valve engine and its surroundings in the engine bay are very clean and appear well-kept. The Northstar powerplant provided 275 HP (@5200 RPM) and 292 lb.-ft of torque (@4400 RPM) when new and is hooked to a four-speed automatic, driving the front wheels – Cadillac went to a F/F layout for Deville in the mid-‘80s. Other modern mechanical conveniences are in place, notably traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system and independent suspension – front and rear with an automatic load-levelling system out back. A full-sized spare is housed in the trunk.
