22 Years Owned 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible SOLD for $32,000
Here is a 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible powered by a C-code 289 cubic-inch V8 and shows refurbishment work carried out before the 22-year custodianship of the current owner. It was at that time that the current red re-spray was commissioned, it is complemented by a black power convertible top and is presented over a black Pony-style interior. The car benefits from several GT tribute appointments including the grille with integrated fog lights as well as the dual exhaust system whose brightwork exits peek through the upgraded rear valance, also finished in brightwork. This convertible is equipped with power steering, 3-speed automatic transmission and front disc brakes. This first-year Mustang is offered with recent service records and a 2-1/4-ton jack by the seller, a friend of the owner assisting with the sales process. The car’s styled 14” wheels are lined in whitewalls by Hankook. The Optimo H724 tires measure 205/75 at all four corners, and are S-speed rated. Underneath is a braking system converted to discs in the front under current ownership – noted on the pedal itself – and drums in the rear.
Bright finishes abound to complement the red paint – rockers, rear quarter faux vents, window surrounds, rocker covers, stylized fuel cap at the rear and Ford/289/Mustang emblems. Chrome bumpers and bumperettes gleam and show no signs of pitting. The power top is demonstrated on this listing’s videos, and the parade boot covers the top when in the down position, protected by the careful owner’s foam inserts – see the Car Review video to see this demonstrated. All side windows open, two each in the doors, for the rear occupants as well as the vent windows in the doors. The soft top presents well with a clear vinyl window.
The car was ordered with black upholstery and matching carpets. All presents well, with updated mats bearing a Mustang logo up front and an upgraded retro-style AM/FM/cassette head unit pushing sound to four speakers. Front buckets are split by a recent centre console offering storage and two cupholders. The car is equipped with lap belts at each of the four Pony-embossed seats. The dash cover and door cards retain a quality finish with little signs of wear – there are receipts and documentation in the gallery relating to an interior refresh in 2007, under current ownership.
The woodgrain three-spoke steering wheel with Mustang emblem at the hub, added under current ownership, fronts a sweeping 120 MPH speedometer flanked by round gauges for fuel on the left and coolant temperature to the right. Chrome knobs on the fascia control headlights, wipers, and cigar lighter, with a matching ignition keyhole. The shifter for the three-speed automatic transmission is incorporated into the floor console and is finished in chrome.
The 289 cubic inch V8 engine starts easily and runs well – please see our start-up and driving videos. The rear wheels are powered through the three-speed automatic transmission. Valve covers have been upgraded to a set by Holley, there remains a factory-style 2-barrel carburetor. While the factory rating of a standard C-code was 200 horsepower, the owner speculates that this is supplemented by the dual exhaust. Recent service as set out in the gallery has remedied speedometer cable, interior lights, power steering pump leak, transmission cooler line leak, washer pump, battery hold-down, coolant system/heater hose, fuel tank sending unit, differential service, brake fluid and rear brake wheel cylinders – over $4,500 invested in 2026.
