51 Years Owned Euro Market 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet 4-Speed Manual, Modified, Restored, Inspected

This is a Euro Model 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet 4-Speed Manual which has been with the seller since 1975. During that time, it has been modified and restored. As well, the seller opted for us to commission an inspection by a third-party service provider, whose report is linked here. Modification is headed up by the Shasta Design big bore kit-equipped 1720 cc Porsche 912 flat-four engine currently powering the car, while the numbers-matching to the Kardex report in our gallery 1582 cc flat-four, known as a 1600, is included in this offering. It is photographed in our gallery and was factory rated at 75 horsepower. The car underwent an exhaustive restoration during the winter of 2012-2013, the most striking aspect of which was the return to the factory colour of Irish Green from blue at seller’s purchase and white during much of his ownership. Back to its original paint colour, it retains original colours in the blue soft top and blue leather interior. A four-speed manual transmission sends power from the 1720 cc engine, estimated at 125 horsepower during our interview of the engine builder, to the rear wheels. (Interestingly, the engine builder has built a big bore kit 1720 cc 912 engine for his own 1964 356C – as a conversation-piece, photographed under plastic and labelled as such in our photo gallery.) After 51 years of ownership, the car is being offered with a car cover, tools photographed in the front trunk, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, Porsche-installed engine in a crate, other original parts, restoration photos two ignition keys and one key for the transmission lock in Toronto, Ontario.

Car Review 51 Years Owned Euro Market 1964 Porsche 356C Cabriolet 4M, Modified, Restored, Inspected

The car was originally delivered at retail in 1963 within Germany in Irish Green, Porsche factory code 6406. When the seller bought the car out of Sudbury, Ontario in 1975, it was blue and he had it painted white before entrusting the return to factory Irish Green in the winter of 2012-2013 to a well-known shop in Cambridge, On. The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity sets out the original blue leather, which has been re-upholstered during the seller’s custodianship, and which matches the blue soft convertible top and parade boot, as well as options in the form of radio antenna complementing the original analog Blaupunkt AM/FM/Medium Wave (Mittelwelle) radio; two loudspeakers; Talbor mirrors; chromed wheels with coloured Porsche crests on the matching covers; and chromed signal ring. There is a copy of a Kardex included in the gallery, also setting out original information, in German; a booklet from coachbuilder Reutter; and its Certificate of Production.

The chromed 15” x 4.5” wheels are covered by chromed caps with coloured Porsche centre crests. Mounted is a set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tires the seller advises were mounted some three years ago. The Vredesteins measure 165 HR 15 at all four corners, with an H speed rating. This car was displayed at the Canadian International Autoshow by Porsche Canada – the sign displayed with the car during the show appears in the gallery. There is also a photo of the car displayed in a past Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The cabin is mostly finished in blue with leather showing signs of use since it was replaced in the early ‘90s according to seller’s memory, though free of rips or tears. The dash face and glove box door match exterior paint. The Blaupunkt is mounted centrally with a VDO analog clock matching other instrumentation said to work intermittently. Knobs on either side of the clock are for headlights and fog lights; either side of the radio are for volume and tuning; and on either side of the ashtray are for cigar lighter and hand throttle/hand-operated choke. Matching blue carpet has been replaced – there is a photo of the original from our visit to the seller’s shop where the original engine is crated – and there is a set of Coco mats protecting it up front.

There is a three-spoke wooden steering wheel with internal horn ring and Porsche emblem in the hub, fronting VDO instrumentation.  The speedometer’s maximum reading is 200 km/h; within it is an odometer showing under 32,000 km after being reset to zero in 2013 following the restoration.  The centrally mounted tachometer shows readings of 6000 RPM for maximum and 4500 RPM for redline.  To its left is a combination fuel level and oil temperature gauge.  The optional loudspeakers are mounted to the outside of front occupants’ legs, and the four-speed manual selector has a rubber shift boot.

The Shasta Design big bore kit-equipped 1720 cc engine that is currently powering the car is from a circa 1968 Porsche 912, it is also modified with a SCAT crankshaft. Seller relates that the 1720 was installed because of its substantially higher power offering, with the engine noted on the Kardex retained (and included in this listing) for provenance. The builder estimates its Solex P11 carburetors-fed output at 125 horsepower, and he has built one for his own ’64 356. A full-flow remote oil filter system is deployed. The four-speed manual transmission gets the power to the rear wheels – the engine can be heard under load in our driving videos on this listing. Most recent servicing was pre-storage, in Autumn 2025, consisting of oil service, brake lines and brake fluid. The 1582 cc engine is included, as are the original 741 transmission (still installed) and various photographed parts, including a decklid luggage rack, noted as correct by the engine builder, with period suitcase. The owner notes that the original 1582 cc engine was replaced under warranty by Porsche before his ownership. This is set out on the Kardex report, though we note what we believe to be a transposition error thereon. The 912 fan shroud is grey to mimic the 356-correct look.

The front trunk is unmodified and houses a fifth Vredestein Sport Classic on a chromed wheel, held down by a period-correct leather strap.  The paint on the underside of its cover remains very good, same for the hinges.
