Overview

Available on Collector Car Canada is a low mileage example of a German super coupe, this 1999 Mercedes CLK 430 Coupe, equipped with AMG sport package, a V8 and distinct Monoblock wheels. This CLK is of an era when the digits in the model’s name related directly to the engine’s size – the car’s V8 displaces 4.3 litres. The AMG is also of significance. AMG was a modifier of Benzes so good that Mercedes-Benz bought the company. The trunk lid AMG emblem was added by a previous owner, the other AMG insignia were applied at the factory in Germany to indicate the AMG sport package. The seller welcomes showings and demo drives of this CLK. It is currently housed at his business which is open Monday to Saturday.

This coupe is finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic (M-B #744), original paint remains. The AMG 18” Monoblock wheels are an OEM Mercedes staggered set, added since the car left the factory. With the spoke-inscribed AMG logo on each, they give the car a sports-minded aggressive look, despite some wear marks. The AMG chrome exhaust tip and AMG lower bodywork – front air dam, rear apron, side skirts – also add to the dressed-up appearance of this car’s exterior and what can be said of the hallowed three-pointed star hood ornament. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+, 225/40R18 in front while the rear pair measure 255/40R18, Y-rated all-around. Spare is a Goodyear Eagle RS-A, covered by an aftermarket rubber trunk mat. Light lenses are clear and uncracked, the fender indicators add a European flair, the fogs at once a safety and sporty accent. Headlights are Xenon and equipped with a headlight cleaning system. Panel gaps hint at the clean Carfax report found in the gallery – no issues there. There are a few minor spots of bubbling on the hood and front edge of the roof, small enough that the camera had a difficult time capturing them – none more than 1” square. There are minor paint chips on the front. The body is otherwise free of any signs of corrosion or defect, as is the underside.

Inside, the car presents very well. Anthracite leather is unmarked and scuff-free. The buckets are heated with power and three-position seat memory on both sides. Adding to the view from the greenhouse is the power-retractable rear sunshade. Burl wood veneer accents the dashboard, console, shifter and door cards. The four-spoke steering wheel is equipped with an airbag and fronts instrumentation highlighted by a 260 km/h speedometer and tachometer with 6,000 RPM red line. They are flanked by temperature and fuel gauges. Cruise control, central locking, power windows are also part of the package, climate-control is dual-zone. There is a light burn mark on the upholstery above the driver’s side A-pillar.

The 4.3L V8 was internally coded by M-B as an M113 and supplied 275 horsepower with 255 lb.-ft of torque on offer. It is housed in a near-immaculate engine compartment. There is a five-speed automatic transmission pushing engine output to the rear wheels. Getting this coupe to a stop is handled by a four-wheel disc ABS system, car is also equipped with electronic stability control (ESP). Service in October 2022 is said to have included an oil change along with replacing the engine air filter, transmission oil pan, and transmission pan gasket. Other past service is documented on the Carfax. Seller reports that the a/c compressor is operational but that the air conditioner is not blowing cold. He pledges to have this resolved before delivery to the new owner.
