1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet

Here is a 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet, an example from the first year of 968 production. It is one of 55 Canadian market Cabriolets, which means rear seats and a 2+2 layout – unlike the 2-place only 968 Cabs for the USA. It is a triple blue car – exterior finished in Midnight Blue, Cobalt Blue partial leather interior and a blue soft top with clear vinyl window, which can be seen close up in our photo gallery. The car is propelled by a 3.0 litre inline four-cylinder engine sending power to the rear wheels through a four-speed Tiptronic automatic transaxle. It has been treated to extensive maintenance under current five-year ownership. Equipment includes a 16” factory five-spoke wheels with coloured Porsche crests, power adjustable front seats, retractable headlights with exposed lenses, an aftermarket Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo, cruise control and automatic climate control. The car is being offered by the retired mechanic/shop owner with three keys, extensive books and documents including owner’s manuals (see the photo gallery), spare parts, replaced parts, a boot cover and – Ontario buyers, take note – an Ontario safety standards certificate.

The car is finished in Midnight Blue Metallic (Porsche code 37W) which is complemented by a replacement blue convertible soft top installed under current ownership, with matching boot cover. Other exterior appointments include the pop-up headlights, integrated fog lights with daytime running lights, monochrome red taillights, colour coded side mirrors, a single exhaust pipe with polished tip and black bumperettes. There is a small chip on the driver’s side rear quarter panel which has been touched up – please see our Car Review video for an up close view. Rubber moulding is noted as loose at the top corners of the windshield.

The 16-inch silver finished five-spoke Porsche wheels are a staggered set-up, with widths of 7”and 8” front and rear. A matching set of Dunlop Direzza tires is installed, V-rated and measuring 205/55 and 225/50. Porsche branded brake calipers are visible through the wheels spokes, employing four pistons and complemented by and ABS system. There are air bags in place for both front seat occupants.

Front seats are trimmed in blue leather, with perforated inserts. Creasing shows on the driver’s seat. There is an 8-way power adjustment system on each of the front seats. Matching carpet and dash remain intact, some carpet fading is noted in the rear of the cabin. The rear seats were finished in vinyl at the factory and have a split folding feature. Power windows and power locks are equipped, as is cruise control, climate control with air conditioning, analog clock, the aftermarket Clarion head unit and a windshield-integrated radio antenna. Two tools necessary for operation of the top, manual or power, remain with the car. While the convertible top can be power operated, two unused replacement cables necessary for this are uninstalled and included with the car. There is an amp in the trunk as well as an uninstalled subwoofer; both appear in the gallery – connections thereto are believed to be the cause of no sound from the Clarion with removable face plate.

Fronting a 300 km/h speedometer and 7800 RPM tachometer with 6600 RPM red line is a leather-wrapped, four-spoke Porsche-branded steering wheel, air bag equipped. As well as a trip odometer, integrated into the speedometer is an odometer reading under 114,000 km. Instrumentation is by VDO and supplementary gauges include readings for coolant temperature, fuel level, gear selection, oil pressure in BAR, and voltage. Switch gear found on the dash fascia includes controls for headlights, fog lights, instrumentation back lighting, rear wiper, four way flashers and climate control, complemented by an exterior temperature readout which can toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius and cigar lighter. The fascia shows an aftermarket carbon fibre facing by Superior Dash.

VarioCam variable valve timing is a key feature of the 3.0 litre inline four, which was factory rated at 236 horsepower and 225 lb.-ft. of torque. There are photos of the engine compartment and underside in our gallery. The Tiptronic transmission flywheel damper plate was replaced with a genuine Porsche item in 2025; the replaced plate appears in the gallery and can be supplied with the car should the new owner desire. Other work carried out since 2021 includes Head rebuilt with new cams, Vario Cam parts replacement, replaced ignition parts, complete water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and battery; all belts and hoses including timing belt, idler, seals and all fluids (brake, coolant, oils) have been replaced. Air conditioning was updated with refrigerant charge (blowing cold). Much of this work is documented on the Carfax. Also appearing on the Carfax is a claim for rear-end damage in Spring 2025. From the photos of the damage in our gallery (photos 194 – 197), it is apparent that none is structural.

The option code sticker remains in the trunk, where is also found a space saver spare tire. It is photographed in the gallery and decodes as follows.

In addition to regularly seen owner’s manual, warranty booklet, service details, other documentation included and appearing in our gallery consists partially of: various parts catalogues, technical notes, conventional books, buyer’s guides, club magazines, brochures, parts binder, Workshop Manual with factory spine graphics, test plans, 8×10 photos with captions in German, original colour selection books, media kit for release (first-year model), even internal Porsche Marketing documents.
