**NOW SOLD** 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 4-speed manual

Overview

This 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible 4-speed manual is finished in blue with a blue and white interior. The 1970 was the first year of the 1600 cc engine in North America. This was a significant upgrade in the evolution of “The People’s Car”, that which once held the title of world’s best-selling car.

The ’70 was also the second year for a double-jointed swing axle independent rear suspension in the North American Beetles, an upgrade from the 1968 and prior without the double joints.

The blue paint on this car is a fresh paint job. This is evident in the finish and is complemented by bright chrome trim, driver and passenger side exterior mirrors, aftermarket check plate running boards as well as aftermarket door latches. The soft top in a matching blue is new, as are chrome bumpers, front and rear. The aftermarket mag wheels provide further contrast, they are shod in tires the seller advises are three years old. The finishing touch on the exterior is provided by the twin chrome exhaust pipe, which have an exaggerated length to provide a classic Beetle look.

Inside, the seats have been changed from OEM to a more comfortable set covered in cloth, with power controls. The colour scheme inside is blue and white, with some items in black for all ’70 Beetles. The four-spoke steering wheel is an example of Beetle standard issue, featuring the familiar Wolfsburg crest. Instrumentation is basic, the only conventional gauge is a speedometer with an odometer and fuel gauge within. An aftermarket head unit is in place, with speakers near the kick plates for each of driver and front passenger. Dials control heater and vents while four-way flasher knob and lighter are presented similarly. The blue carpets are fair, and the seller is including a new set, should the new owner want to change them. If the seller were keeping the car, he would do this and replace the rear seat upholstery.

The air-cooled 1.6 litre flat four-cylinder engine was rated at 57 horsepower when new. Though not noted for excessive power, the engine room appears clean and its design, being basic, makes the various components easy to locate and troubleshoot as need be. From its photo, the engine shows as clean with components like distributor, spark plug wires, belt and pulleys appearing in a good state of repair. A four-speed manual transmission gets the power to the rear wheels. The engine cover has four sets of louvers to contribute to the cooling function. A fresh oil change has been carried out in preparation for the sale and new brakes are in place all-around. This 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible is available in Colborne, Ontario.
