1975 Triumph TR6 Convertible 4-speed Manual
We have for auction a 1975 Triumph TR6 Convertible with 4-speed manual transmission in the traditional British Racing Green. This has been owned for over 30 years by the seller’s husband, who is no longer able to drive and enjoy it. It has seen limited use in the past 10 or so years but fires right up and drives along nicely.
TR6s remain well-loved by the traditional British sports car set for their simplicity and convertible tops, though they are considered by many as a step up from some of the others of the era given the inline-six engines they boast – generally offering more get-up-and-go than their four-cylinder contemporaries.
The exterior of this TR6 is the famed British Racing Green. It was repainted soon after the seller’s acquisition over 30 years ago and the paint continues to present well, evidence of its indoor storage in the same home garage over the seller’s entire ownership tenure. We do note some imperfections on the driver’s side rocker, as shown in the gallery. Paint code is noted as 19 on the VIN plate, which decodes as white. The top is simple to use and is in very good condition. Open air motoring is a mere five or so seconds away from the cockpit – see the top operation video. A couple of great bonuses for this convertible are that it includes a tonneau cover to cover the folded roof when the top is down as well as a cabin cover when the car is parked, top down, outdoors and skies might be threatening; the twin exhaust pipes look great, too. Bigger than most rims on Brits of the period, the original 15” Triumph wheels remain, with grippy Goodyear Eagle LS tires mounted, measuring 195/65, ten millimetres wider than stock. All lights are functional, with headlights protected by fitted grilles and all lenses in very good condition, with upgrades in the form of dedicated front running lights as well as a third brake light. Chrome bumpers, gas door and exterior mirrors shine; the owner’s longtime membership in the Toronto Triumph Club is highlighted by the windshield decal and grille badge, sure signs of a TR6 enthusiast.
The interior remains quite presentable and the period-correct AM/FM radio is functional, with the exterior antenna manually operable. Seat foam was replaced during the owner’s custodianship and the receipt appears in the photo gallery; driver’s seat back outer bolster has been repaired. Both doors on the brown vinyl panels offer map pockets. All-weather Triumph-branded/-fitted mats are included, with stock carpets underneath. Cockpit is a nice reflection of British motoring of the period, with a woodgrain dash face, wooden shift knob and three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel. Smiths instrumentation is also reflective of ‘70s British state of the art, the odometer shows under 57,000 miles. In the rear of the passenger compartment, there is a mounted fire extinguisher. Trunk is clean and includes a full-sized spare on a steel wheel and a jack kit, the tools for which are in a Triumph-branded pouch. Trunk prop rod continues to function as designed.
Under the hood, the 2.5L carbureted engine continues to start easily and run well. The straight six was good for 101 horsepower (4900 RPM) when new and the four-speed manual transmission sends the power to the rear wheels. There are two Zenith-Stromberg carburetors, torque was rated at a generous 128 lb.-ft. (3000 RPM). As with any non-new car, an inspection is recommended; we suspect there might be some coolant leakage, between underside photos and the coolant container found in the trunk of the car. Underside of the car is clean, save for the coolant observed in the photos, and rust-free.
This 1975 Triumph TR6 Convertible 4-speed Manual is available with Owner’s Manual, Service Records, two tonneau covers – cabin cover and stowed roof cover – from the owner of 30+ years in Brampton, Ontario.
