Overview

1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible 4-Speed Manual, Restored, Inspected

Here is a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible 4-speed manual, finished in red over grey and black tweed upholstery. This example is powered by an air-cooled turbocharged 164 ci (2.7 L) flat-six paired with a four-speed manual. Under previous ownership, this Corvair underwent a refurbishment which included overhauling the turbocharged 164ci flat-six, replacing the carburetor, converting to five-lug rims from four, installing front disc brakes, reupholstering the interior, and a full repaint. Additional work completed by the seller in 2025 included the installation of a refurbished carburetor, an engine tune-up by a local Corvair expert and a compression test. The car was acquired in 2023 from Arizona and has been kept indoors since arriving in Canada. The five-digit mechanical odometer displays below 36,000 miles although it is currently inoperative so this unit is being sold as TMU (True Mileage Unknown). This Corvair is now offered for sale with two sets of 3 keys (ignition/door lock, Trunk Lock, & gas tank), manufacturer’s literature, partial service records, a car cover, and an inspection report, linked here in Brighton, Ontario. Ontario buyers, please note: the car comes with an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.
This rust-free convertible was repainted in red under previous ownership in 2018. The black soft top and the grey top boot were both replaced in 2022. Exterior equipment includes chrome bumpers, quad headlights, louvered decklid, Monza Spyder badges, and a new driver’s side exterior mirror. Exterior imperfections include a cracked windshield seal, a paint chip above the left headlight, and other minor paint imperfections which are shown in the photo gallery below.
The colour-matched 14″ five-lug painted steel wheels feature polished trim rings and polished Chevrolet Motor Division hubcaps. The wheels are fitted with 195/70R14 Aspen Touring A/S tires which were mounted in 2017, date coded 06/16. Braking is by disc brakes at the front, converted under previous ownership, and drum brakes at the rear. Seller advises that front and rear springs and shocks were replaced under previous ownership.
The cabin is finished in grey and black tweed upholstery, with bucket seats in the front and a bench seat in the rear. The door cards match the 2-tone gray and black finish, with all black carpeting and door panel map pockets both installed in 2018. Interior features include a retro-style radio (demonstrated in a video on this listing), front lap belts, and red vent covers. The dash pad has been removed, with the finish of the dash matching the exterior of the car. Seller advises that the convertible top hold downs, rubber sun visor strips, window well insulation, and the window seals were all \replaced under previous ownership. Interior flaws include the heater blower fan and passenger door lock both inoperable, along with turn signals not consistently self-cancelling.
The two-spoke Monza steering wheel fronts instrumentation including a 120-MPH speedometer and a 6000 RPM tachometer. The Monza-branded steering wheel features a black rim with a polished horn half-ring and chrome accents. Auxiliary instrumentation includes a fuel level gauge, manifold pressure, and cylinder head temperature. The odometer displays below 36,000 miles, although currently inoperative, making true mileage unknown.
This Corvair’s powerplant is an air-cooled and turbocharged 164 ci (2.7 L) flat-six, mounted in the rear, reportedly rebuilt under previous ownership in 2018 which included a replacement cylinder head, new carburetor, and the installation of an alternator. Factory-rated output was 180 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. The seller notes that a recent service was performed by a local Corvair expert which included installation of a rebuilt YH carburetor, throttle-linkage adjustment, fuel filter and return-line replacement, reusable air-filter installation, and the replacement of ignition components (condenser, points, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap/rotor) in 2025. A compression test and turbo inspection was also performed at this time, with the inspector noting that the average was 150-155 psi per cylinder and the turbo was working to factory spec. A new battery was installed in April of 2025.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual. The driveline configuration includes independent rear suspension and four-lug hubs converted to five-lug at time of the disc-brake installation. Replacement of the differential U-joints were said to have been completed by the previous owner in 2022, and the muffler and exhaust piping in 2017.
