Sub-29K km 1989 Bentley Turbo R
Closes Wednesday, April 15, 2:45 pm ET, possibly subject to Second Chance and Last Chance Systems
Here is a 1989 Bentley Turbo R finished in Royal Blue Metallic over Mushroom Hides with contrasting Blue piping and Grey Wilton wool carpet. The car is equipped with features befitting its north-of-$200,000 original MSRP: the original aluminum wheels with Bentley emblem on centre caps and measuring 15”; original Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette stereo head unit; power front seats with memory; as well as Burr walnut veneer dash, console and door card fascia complementing the Connolly leather in Mushroom. This is a Canadian-market car as evidenced by the Transport Canada decal in a door jamb and the Metric-dominant speedometer, local to Toronto since new. The car is offered with some service documentation from current and former ownership, and original factory literature in its Bentley leather attaché.
The car wears its original paint in a shade of Royal Blue Metallic, Bentley code 9510457. The dominant exterior feature is the quad headlight set-up, supported by silver-coloured emblems with red script, fender-mounted indicators, vertical bar grille with body-coloured surround, bright window trim, polished twin exhaust tips, power mirrors, and a power antenna.
The 15” stock wheels are finished in silver colour. They each feature a Bentley emblem on the centres and are lined in four matching 255/65 AVON Turbospeed CR27 made in England and with a V-speed rating. The spare is mounted in its factory-installed position, on the underside – as seen in the gallery. There is a set of four-wheel disc brakes employing an anti-lock system.
In the cabin is a rich combination of Connolly leather in Mushroom (Bentley code A43136, visible under hood) with blue piping (Bentley code A4133) with Burr walnut veneer dash, console and door card facings as well as grey Wilton wool carpet (Bentley code 08). The locking storage compartment in the centre console still contains the factory two cassette package of (i) music to demonstrate the stock Pioneer KEH-8050 stereo and (ii) head cleaner. Both front power seats are equipped with a memory function and the automatic climate control includes functional air conditioning. Cruise control is operated by a switch on the shifter. As well as being treated to similar creature comforts, outward rear occupants also get use of footrests.
The three-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel fronts a column shifter for the automatic transmission and instrumentation by Jaeger. Centrally mounted are the 260 km/h speedometer and 5000 RPM tachometer with 4500 RPM red line. Complemented by a trip odometer, the odometer integrated into the speedometer shows under 29,000 km. To the left of the speedometer are warning lights, and then a pod for ignition and exterior light controls, below which are washer/wiper controls, dash light dimmer, and buttons to display fuel range and oil level. Toward the centre of the dash face are gauges for fuel, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. Lower on the centre stack are vents, lower still are a VDO analog clock, voltmeter and analog thermostat for the outside. Each front passenger has his own arm rest, fore of which are power seat and seat memory controls, a chrome-adorned ashtray/lighter combination and side mirror controls. On photo day, we were unable to adjust the passenger seat forward and back. The matching veneer doored glove box is lockable and contains factory documentation in a leather attaché as photographed in the gallery, dash topper is leather.
The rear wheels are powered by the 6.75 litre V8, fed by Bosch fuel injection and supplemented by a Garret turbocharger. This powerplant produces 300 horsepower and 486 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is put to pavement via the 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission. The “R” in the model name stands for roadholding and is the result of stiffening the suspension 50% relative to the car’s predecessor, the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo. This was a requirement of engineering director Mike Dunn, in response to the original intended stiffening upswing of a mere 10% in roll stiffness. Contributing to the dynamic development: thicker sway bars, a Panhard rod to reduce rear subframe movement, firmer dampers and wider alloy wheels matched by wider tires.
This Sub-29K km 1989 Bentley Turbo R is offered by the long-term owner with factory books and manuals, partial service records and two keys in Toronto, Ontario.
