1969 MGB GT 4-Speed Manual
Closes Wednesday, April 28, 3:45 pm ET, possibly subject to Second Chance and Last Chance Systems
1969 MG MGB GT 4-Speed Manual is a partially restored example powered by its original 1798 cc engine mated to the original 4-speed manual transmission. Restoration procedures have included an interior refresh and partial re-paint.
The partial re-paint on the driver’s side was carried out by the current owner with its finish appearing fresher than the patina found on the rest of this GT. The swoopy coupe is equipped with knock-off wire wheels, chrome bumpers, chrome window surrounds, illuminating side lights – front and rear – which double as reflectors, Lucas headlights, vent windows in the doors and pop-out side rear windows for effective air flow. Emblems, trim, telescopic antenna, and bullet-shaped sport exterior mirrors are complete. The seller notes minor surface rust on the rear below the hatch, on the edge of the engine compartment and the driver’s side sport mirror, with various hallmarks of patina throughout.
The 14” knock-off wire wheels are skinned in a set of whitewall radials by Hankook. Hankook model is H714 and they measure 185/70 with an S-speed rating and date code of 2006. Underneath the knock-offs are front disc brakes up front and a set of drums in the rear. The car is equipped with rack and pinion steering from the factory.
The front buckets, whose shoulder belts are equipped with an inertia system, and rear bench were reupholstered in vinyl with correct pattern under prior ownership, they are the bellwether for an interior showing little wear – carpets and door cards are in similar replaced condition while the padded dash cover and its fascia are unmarked. Both the metal-spoked steering wheel and 4-Speed shifter’s contact surfaces are appointed in wood, each with and MG emblem. There is a map pocket on the passenger door and neither door has an interior dedicated handle. There are four spare carpets, two are for under the front seats, pictured in the hatch which has matching black carpet. Underneath the hatch carpet is a false floor where a spare tire can be housed.
The three-spoked steering wheel fronts instrumentation by SMITHS, featuring a speedometer topping out at 120 MPH and an 8000 RPM maximum reading tachometer with 7000 RPM red line. True centre for the driver’s view shows an oil pressure gauge and the centre gauges are flanked by a fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge. Light switches appear to the left of the wheel, with heating/ventilation controlled by knobs on either side and choke to the right. There is a British Leyland AM radio in place and the emergency brake handle is located on the passenger’s side of the transmission tunnel.
The 1.8 litre inline-four was rated at 97 horsepower when new. Fuel is delivered by twin SU carburetors while power is delivered to the rear wheels via the 4-speed stick to motivate this sub-1,000 kg machine. Under hood labels appear original and complete. The car’s charging system was upgraded to use a Bosch alternator under prior ownership and there is a kill switch aft of the driver’s side rear passenger’s foot well. For Ontario buyers, the owner believes the car will pass Ontario safety as it sits, unless the tires prevent this.
This 1969 MG MGB GT 4-Speed Manual is offered with one key by the four-year owner in Cobourg, Ontario.
