Overview

Offered is a 1988 Porsche 928 S4, finished in rare Marine Blue over a blue leather interior – a second-year S4, after the biggest upgrade of the 928 in its 1978 through 1995 run. This vehicle is powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted 5.0-litre V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transaxle, sending power to the rear wheels. The odometer currently reads under 190,000 km. This example has been with its owner approximately 14 years and used primarily for club events, witness the PCA sticker on the driver’s side rear glass. Factory equipment includes the desirable limited-slip differential (Option Code 200; see photo of same in our gallery), sport seats, a sunroof, and a high-fidelity sound system. It is offered with two keys, a fitted car cover, and the original owner’s, Service/Warranty and Workshop manuals in three-ring binders.

The exterior is finished in its original Marine Blue paint, with the seller confirming that no repaint has been performed, supported by the clean Carfax included on this listing. Exterior equipment includes integrated fog lights, pop-up headlamps, a rear window wiper, body-coloured flag mirror caps and a body-colour rear spoiler. Porsche badging is retained at the front hood and across the rear fascia. Paint imperfections are noted on the front bumper cover while the clear coat on the roof is imperfect, the front spoiler on the driver’s side needs refastening and paint on the front bumper cover shows scuffing – imperfections are shown in the gallery.

While the car was originally delivered with 16” rims, a set of 17” Cup II rims, OEM for the later 928 GTS, are mounted with W-rated Yokohama Advan Neova tires in staggered 225/45 and 255/40 sizing still with good tread, though noted as older and complemented by Porsche emblemed centre caps. Braking is by four-wheel discs, with ABS, as standard on the S4 model, calipers are Porsche branded. The car was also equipped with a limited slip differential at the factory, as set out in the Porsche options decal still appearing in the rear hatch, decoded below and photographed in our gallery. Underside images are also included in the gallery, along with views of the suspension and wheel condition. The car is equipped with a rear muffler bypass, commonly preferred by 928 owners for its throaty/growling sound showcasing the V8. Hear it in our various videos on this listing.
The cabin is upholstered in blue leather across the seats with colour-matched dashboard, door cards, centre console, and carpeting. The dash was recovered in 2026, addressing a common 928 downfall almost 40 years after manufacture; in fact, the job was not quite complete at the time our photographer visited; the console and its accessories have since been re-installed – including fresh window switches. The stock four-spoke steering wheel has been switched in favour of a three-spoke Momo unit with sporty feel and Porsche emblem. Four-way power- and manually-adjustable front bucket seats feature integrated controls on the seat bases; scuffing is noted on the outer driver’s seat bolster. Comfort and convenience features include converted air conditioning which the owner represents to blow cold, central locking, power windows, and a Blaupunkt stereo system. The rear cargo area retains its factory cargo net and blue carpet, under which are found a spare tire and the battery (the spare tire was in the seller’s basement on photo day, a photo of it does appear in the gallery). Rear seat passengers are treated to rear visors, photographed in our gallery.
The driver is presented with the Momo three-spoke, Porsche-branded steering wheel and a gauge cluster centred by a tachometer and a 300 km/h speedometer. Supplementary instrumentation includes readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. Switchgear for the climate control system is positioned in the centre stack along with audio controls.
This vehicle’s powerplant is a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, part of the revised S4 generation introduced in 1987. Factory ratings were 316 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque when new. The engine is equipped with Bosch electronic fuel injection. Details of past maintenance are contained in the included service manuals and the Carfax. Some receipts are in our gallery. Recent maintenance related by the owner includes battery replacement (Interstate), replacement front fascia leather to match, replaced a/c compressor, and dash lights have been replaced. Beyond this, he has replaced belts including timing belt, water pump, pulleys, Ignition wires, coolant, oil/air/fuel filters, light switch, and window switches; transmission was adjusted, oil changed with filter, window motors rebuilt, and dash indicator adjusted. The original tool kit, smartly stowed in a hidden case in the hatch, is “almost complete”. A new washer fluid tank with pump is included with the car, given the installed tank has a leak. The owner believes the car will pass Ontario safety check with a new set of tires, which he believes is better selected by the new owner based on his driving preferences, and perhaps a set of rear bushings.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through the stock four-speed automatic transaxle by Mercedes-Benz. The transmission has an upgraded shifter, as shown in the gallery. According to the seller, known upcoming maintenance includes the tires and, later, perhaps rear bushings. Otherwise, the car is presented as mechanically complete and consistent with its mileage and age. Seller relays that previous owner installed a replacement alloy radiator and heater valve while air conditioning, blowing cold, has been updated to R134a refrigerant.

This 1988 Porsche 928 S4 is offered by the 14-year owner with clean Carfax, two keys, owners and service manuals, workshop manuals in three-ring binders, keepsake magazines, 928-shaped landline phone, 1/43 model car, novelty die cast cars – one with sunroof, one with ski rack – spare parts including a new-in-box aftermarket alternator, replaced parts, OEM Porsche hardware, cargo cover, cargo net, uninstalled front parcel shelves, protective fender/nose covers for use in servicing, and a fitted car cover in Acton, Ontario.

Founder Dave Says:

What is there to say about the 928? Originally slated 50 years ago to replace the 911 but the 911’s following remains strong today. This one has some goodies 928 aficionados will notice: limited slip differential, upgraded Cup II 17″ wheels, sport seats and a recovered dash. And check the extras in our gallery. Buy from a fastidious owner.
