Available now is a Euro Market 1972 Porsche 911E Targa 5-Speed Manual, Modified – modified in that its engine and transmission have been changed, as has its exterior colour. The car remains an air-cooled Porsche, propelled by the powerplant of a European Market 1972 911, originally installed in a 911T – making it a 2.4 litre flat-six. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with a dogleg pattern, originally installed in an earlier 911. Now finished in white, the original colour of the car was Signal Yellow – as set out in the Porsche AG Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) appearing in the photo gallery and on the original plaque in the driver’s door jamb – paint code 114. The “E” was the period mid-range 911, between the base “T” and top-of-the-range “S”; this example retains its original black interior, the front buckets feature cloth inserts with vinyl bolsters. The car is equipped with a removable roof panel with fixed rear window, Targa bar with factory “Targa” inscription on either side, 15” Fuchs wheels and an aftermarket three-spoke Indianapolis FORMEL 400 mm steering wheel by ITALVOLANTI. This Euro Market 1972 Porsche 911E Targa 5-Speed Manual, Modified is offered by its owner of 14 years with a front protective bra, two keys, some parts receipts from current ownership and the Porsche CoA.

The car was refinished in white under prior ownership. Between the time of the original Signal Yellow and current white, the car’s exterior was red, visible in two small paint chips on the cover for the front trunk and contained in our photo gallery. It features a vinyl-covered removable roof panel, which fits snugly into the stainless steel Targa bar, badged as such. There is a driver’s side mirror, capped in brightwork. As well, a one-year-only feature of the 911, there is an exterior oil filler door on the passenger’s side quarter panel, oelklappe in German, in addition to the similar-looking fuel door on the driver’s side front fender.

The 15″ Fuchs alloy wheels are lined in Michelin 195/65 XGT V4 tires which the owner says were installed before he bought and which he recommends be replaced before using the car. Underneath, there is a four-wheel disc brake system in place. Also underneath, the seller notes rust in the driver’s side floor, rocker and jack point, shown in the gallery.

The original black interior retains a good condition. The front buckets are complemented by fold-down seats for two additional passengers with vinyl upholstery, behind which is a parcel shelf. The black seats are matched by carpets and the door cards. There is a locking glove box, an upgraded Sony AM/FM/CD head unit and perforation in the dash for the original one-speaker set-up. The carpet for the passenger’s side rear passenger is missing and an approximately 1 cm split between the stock speaker and a defrost duct is noted and shown in the gallery.

Fronted by the period ITALVOLANTI steering wheel, factory VDO instrumentation is comprised of a central 8000 RPM tachometer with 6800 RPM redline, a 250 km/h speedometer and analog clock to its right, as well as gauges for oil – level, temperature, pressure – and fuel to its left. Incorporated into the speedometer is an odometer showing under 95,000 km and a trip odometer whose reset dial is below on a horizontal surface. While the owner believes the odometer reading to be authentic, this car is being offered with True Mileage Unknown (TMU).

The 911/67 2.4-liter flat-six was sourced from a same-model-year “T” with engine number 6529063 (shown in our gallery)and is equipped with Zenith carburetors, rebuilt under current ownership. It was factory rated at 128 horsepower. This power is routed to the rear wheels through a five-speed dogleg 901 manual sourced from an earlier 911 and whose serial number also appears in the gallery. Both engine and transmission swaps were performed under prior ownership, engine and transmission serial numbers are photographed and in our photo gallery. Other maintenance within the past year – with under 100 km since – includes new rubber gas lines installed, fuel tank clean, distributor cap, rotor, and points. While it has been cleaned, the owner recommends a fuel tank flush. This spring, he carried out an oil and filter change as well as replacing the seal between fuel tank and body and then replacement of both the front latch panel and battery box, the latter repair documented in the gallery. He has also previously changed spark plugs and ignition wires, again with minimal km’s driven since. The owner has a 12-volt battery in place rather than the stock series two 6-volt set-up while stays for both the engine cover and front storage cover are weak and not holding up the covers.
