**SOLD on the CCC Buy-It-Now Lot** 1971 Datsun 1600SSS 4-Speed Manual

Overview

Here is a 1971 Datsun 1600 SSS 4-speed manual, finished in its original Cocoa Brown over black vinyl upholstery. This example is a European-market high-performance model positioned at the top of the period 510 bodied cars. It is powered by a 1.6-litre L16 inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission and factory-rated at 109 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, a surge relative to the North American market 510 models. Under current ownership since 2019, the car was originally sold new in Portugal and retains Portuguese import stickers and a Movauto delivery plate. This 1600 SSS is now offered with two keys, some original books and documents, an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate, and a set of original Dunlop alloy wheels, and is located in Bowmanville, Ontario, being represented by the owner’s brother.

Refinished in factory Cocoa Brown, the car received a professional glass-out respray in the original shade under prior ownership. SSS-specific exterior trim includes specific badging, bright window surrounds, and chrome bumpers with rubber overriders. Rear indicator lenses in amber are a tell of the car’s European origin. As well, Portuguese-language lubrication and service stickers remain in the engine compartment, supporting its European provenance, while the Movauto delivery plate remains affixed to the inner fender. The car is a tribute to Datsun success in the East Africa Safari endurance rallies of the early 1970s, showing bumper-mounted tow loops, a factory-style skid plate and rear bumper steps. The pair of custom-fabricated mesh headlight guards pictured in the gallery below also pay homage to the EASR (sometimes called the Safari Rally), which the 1600 SSS won in 1970, immediately before this ’71 model was built. Datsun won the 1970 Safari Rally with a 240Z, an example of which the selling family sold with us last month. Minor cosmetic blemishes are visible in the photos.

This example wears 13-inch steel wheels are mounted with FEDIMA 175/70 R13 tyrestires, with the rear set showing “F4” markings. Braking is power assisted with front discs and rear drums, matching SSS specification. Suspension includes the SSS-tuned independent MacPherson-strut front and semi-trailing-arm rear setup, offering the performance-oriented geometry that distinguished the SSS from standard 510 models. The original Dunlop alloy rims are included in the sale and are pictured in the trunk photographs.
Upholstery is black vinyl with matching door panels and carpets. Equipment includes a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel, manual windows, a heater/defroster, and an AM push-button radio. Factory-style bucket front seats are complemented by rear bench seating. Gallery images show areas of minor interior damage and trim. Instrumentation includes a 180-km/h speedometer, an 8,000 RPM tachometer with a 6,500 RPM redline, and gauges between the two for coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer under 30,000 km, with total mileage unknown.

This 1600 SSS is powered by its matching-number L16 inline-four with twin SU-type carburetors. Factory output was rated at 109 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 105 lb.-ft. of torque, as specified on the original Nissan Motor Co. data plate, where the photographed engine number also appears. Recent service during current ownership includes a fuel-pump replacement, while electrical work was performed by a previous owner. A factory specification plate details fluid capacities in Portuguese and recommends Shell lubricants.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox and a 3.70:1 R160 final-drive differential. The SSS package included close ratio gearing intended by Datsun for improved acceleration and more engaging performance. Routine driveline maintenance has been performed, and no aftermarket modifications have been reported during current ownership.

This 1600 SSS combines European-market performance upgrades with the design of the 510 sedan. Documentation includes the Nissan Motor Co. Yokohama build plate, the Portuguese Movauto delivery plate, and original lubrication stickers.
This 1971 Datsun 1600SSS 4-Speed Manual is offered with two keys, some original books and documents, the original Dunlop alloys, Portuguese imports plates and stickers as well as an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate by the seller, who is the owner’s brother, in Bowmanville, On.
