Overview
Now available on Collector Car Canada is this 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible with optional LS5 454 cubic inch V8, offered by the seven-year owner who believes he is the third. The 454 is paired up with a three-speed automatic to drive the rear wheels. It has been refinished in black, a special-order colour for 1972; furthering the uniqueness of this car is the dramatic red leather interior, an option above the base. The soft top is a matching black while 15” Rallye wheels contribute to the period look, complemented by four-wheel disc brakes and original AM/FM radio. Service in 2025 by a Corvette specialty shop includes exhaust, power steering, new oil pan gasket, fluid changes and an overhaul of the air conditioning system to add to the seasonal maintenance done during the owner’s careful ownership tenure.
This Stingray was finished in white at the factory and repainted to the current glossy black finish under prior ownership, with no white showing today. The primary exterior feature on this 1972 is likely the matching chrome bumpers prized by collectors, the last year the Corvette was so equipped – with a move to a poly up front in ’73, then front and rear after that. The exterior further features Stingray emblems and venting on both front fenders, hood venting with 454 emblems on each side, dual chrome mirrors and dual exhaust exits from the twin mufflers. The owner notes that the replacement soft top is not perfectly sound-tight.
The 15” x 8” Rallye wheels’ brightwork is matched by the trim rings and centres. They are lined in BFGoodrich Radial T/A radials with raised white lettering in stock sizes, 235/60R15 fore of the cabin and 245/60R15 in the rear; customer’s shop Western Corvette notes tread depths as 10/32” and 9/32”. Underneath is a set of disc brakes at all four corners, the pad depth is noted on the mechanic’s 2025 inspection sheet as 8 mm. The car also benefits from power steering work completed in 2025.
The bucket seats are trimmed in original red leather upholstery and matched by a red dashboard, door panels and carpets. Equipment includes power steering, hand-crank side windows, lap belts, dash-mounted map pockets, and an original style AM/FM head unit. There is a centre arm rest also upholstered in red while the rim of the three-spoke original steering wheel, reinstalled in 2025.
The reinstalled original steering wheel fronts a 160 MPH speedometer and tachometer maxing out at 7000 RPM with 5300 RPM red line. Please note that there are photos of an aftermarket steering wheel which has since been removed. The currently installed steering wheel is shown in photo 018 in the gallery while the removed aftermarket unit will accompany the car. Centrally-mounted gauges give readings for fuel, water temperature, oil pressure and battery voltage. There is also an analog clock in this central cluster. The five-digit odometer shows under 75,000 miles, owner estimates he has added under 1,000.
The 454 cubic-inch LS5 V8 is noted by the owner as original, numbers matching, stamping is photographed in our gallery. Factory horsepower rating was 270. Its starter was replaced and its carburetor rebuilt in 2025 by Western Corvette of suburban Calgary. The three-speed automatic transmission is the factory GM Turbo-Hydramatic TH-400. There are extensive photos of the underside in our gallery to support the owner’s statement of no corrosion on this Western car.
Work completed in 2025 in preparation for the sale included a new oil pan gasket and rear main seal; repairing an exhaust leak; new starter; complete tune-up with new spark plugs, carburetor rebuild, fuel filter and set timing; recharge of the a/c system with a blower motor connector repair; fluid changes as detailed in the work order in our gallery; reinstall the original steering wheel; power steering hoses and fluid; transmission service; test of the charging system (good); and lubricate chassis. Also, a new battery has been installed in 2025. The mechanical shop’s inspection sheet is also included in our gallery.
This 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible with LS5 454 c.i. V8 is available with two sets of keys, owner’s manual, original documentation including brochures and service records from the seven-year owner in Calgary, Alberta.
