2021 06 03 CCC Featured External Listing

1987 Toyota Supra 5-speed manual

The third generation Toyota Supra signaled a decoupling of the model from the Toyota Celica.  Through 1985, the two shared a tight lineage, with the Supra name originating as a trim level of Celica.  By ’86, the Celica went to a front-drive, front-engine layout while Supra retained R/R with little similarity in appearance.

The exterior colour is a period-consistent burgundy.  That exterior is dressed up in tasteful original wheels, fog lights and rear wing.  The 7-inch factory wheels are wrapped in BF Goordrich Touring T/A tires measuring 225/50R16.  Inside, the theme continues with a burgundy leather 2+2 interior and burgundy carpets.  As the leather on the steering wheel and driver’s seat is worn, the interior presents as an honest example.

The car is well-optioned.  Power windows and locks, power mirrors, power lumbar, cruise control, air conditioning, original Toyota AM/FM/cassette head unit and headlight washers are all photographed in the seller’s gallery.  Beyond the lumbar support control, seats are manually adjustable and the three-spoke steering wheel adds to the car’s sporty presence.  Original owner’s manual is stowed in the glove box.

Instrumentation is an illustration of the Toyota simplicity of the era, though gauges offer considerable breadth.  Tachometer and a 240 km/h speedometer share the most prominent position on the dash, supported by temperature and fuel gauges, voltmeter and oil pressure gauge.  An LED digital clock is also incorporated, to the right of the speedometer.

While 1987 was the first model year a turbocharged engined was available in the Supra Turbo, the car is powered by a normally aspirated 3.0 litre inline-six 7M-GE engine which produced 200 horsepower when new.  The powerplant is a four valves per cylinder number and dual overhead cams.  It is connected to a 5-speed manual transmission sending force to those rear wheels.  The engine is known for Toyota reliability and has powered the car to 176,000 km.

The engine bay is tidy and has been detailed.  Metal surfaces appear bright and free from rust while plastic and rubber appear clean and supple – free from brittleness.
