This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL comes in turquoise on a white interior. Appropriate for the colour scheme, this Galaxie is photographed by the sea and is available in New Brunswick. The XL trim is an indicator of bucket seats up front while the rear seat is a bench. The ’64 came with a more sculpted look than in the prior year, inspired mostly for NASCAR aerodynamics needs in a time where the term “stock car racing” had more meaning than today.
The standard engine for this machine was a 289 cubic inch V8. When new, it was good for approximately 200 horsepower. Widely used at the time by the Blue Oval, this displacement was offered in the wildly successful Mustang the following model year, its first. The car is optioned with an automatic transmission and this Galaxie is a rear-drive machine.
The white top provides a nice complement to the turquoise blue paint and extensive chrome. Another impressive exterior feature is the rear deck which accommodates the spare tire. It is interesting how housing the spare was a showpiece for many vehicles of the era whereas today manufacturers do their best to keep it from view. We are not sure about the spare tire itself but the combo of whitewalls and body-coloured wheel cover trim on this car also look smart.
Underside photos make the car look lightly used since what we are guessing was a recent restoration. There are only a couple but we see protective underspray and a dearth of corrosion.
