2021 12 03 Featured External Listing – 1979 Chevrolet Monza Spyder

Here is a 1979 Chevrolet Monza Spyder.  Most Monzas came from the factory with four-cylinder engines but this is a factory V8.  It has had extensive modifications so it is far from factory spec but the fact that it is a Monza makes it rare enough.  These are an extremely rare sight on Canadian roads today, count on Greater Vancouver to be its home, where salt does not hit the roads as a habit as it does in most of Canada.

The Monza’s run was from 1975 through 1980.  In its year of release, the 2+2 won Motor Trend’s coveted Car of the Year award.  The 2+2, as is the subject here, was the primary body style.  There was also a Towne Coupe notchback available and, starting in 1978 following the end of the Vega station wagon, came a Monza wagon which was only available for two model years.  The Monza 2+2 and notch were produced through the end of 1980 as 1980 models as the Cavalier, model year 1982, was released in early 1981, spelling the end of the Monza.

The trim level of this Spyder came with many goodies; good thing, the base 2+2 with 2.3 litre I4 was quite spartan.  The Spyder was built with white-letter tires, a firmer sport suspension, two-spoke sport steering wheel, centre console, various Spyder badging appointments and dual pipes for the rumbling V8.

With the plentiful mods on this car, we will concentrate on these.  The rear-end has been rebuilt and is the equivalent of a fourth generation Camaro, which makes it much more solid than a factory Monza.  Last year, the engine was rebuilt on account of a bad bearing.  New bearings, new crank, new valve seals, new piston rings and some further servicing on the engine have resulted in a claimed 12-1/2 second car in the quarter mile.  The automatic transmission has been upgraded with an anti-ballooning converter, new cooler lines of woven stainless steel with upgraded cooler.  The comprehensive ad describes more mods, it is required reading to get a sense of them.

The owner describes the car as completely rust-free, straight and always garage-kept during his 12-year custodianship.  The yellow paint and factory spoiler add to the uniqueness.  New wheels and tires within the past 2,000 km are in place at all four corners.  The 15” Bassett racing wheels are staggered, 7” up front and 8” in the rear.  They wear white letter BFGoodrich radial T/As – what else?! – 205 in front and 235 in the rear.  The modified interior looks as presentable as does the exterior, notwithstanding the dent on the driver’s side rear quarter panel, with aftermarket audio by Alpine.
