1959 Volkswagen Beetle 4-speed manual

This Volkswagen Beetle is striking in a pale green with green interior.  It is a German market car which first came to North America when imported by a Kansas resident.  It has been in Canada for nine years.  Not specifically itemized, the car has been modified from original form.  It sits very low to the ground and sports rear wheels much wider than stock.

The powerplant for this VW Type 1, as designated internally by Volkswagen, is out back in the form of a flat four cylinder.  It displaces a modest 1,192 cc.  The engine was released in 1954, dwarfing the previous 1,131 cc engine and improving on various components, particularly the crankshaft.  The newer engine increased power by 20% to 36 horsepower and drives the rear wheels.

Exterior features include the lowered body, chrome bumpers with a bright shine, twin chrome exhaust pipes and exposed hubs.  The latter serve to showcase the Beetle’s impressive and larger-than-most bolt pattern made up by its five wheel bolts.  The chrome bumpers are supplemented with bumper guards and overrider bars.

Pale green paint presents well, including on the underside of the engine cover, and the white steel wheels provide a sharp contrast.  Simple headlights, indicator lights and brake lights are in place and these harken back to a simpler era.  This 1959 is the second year for the more rectangular rear window which replaced an oval number.  The greenhouse is airy and visibility to the exterior is very good.

Inside, a matching two-tone pale green and white motif provides consistency.  The white steering wheel shows extensive patina, it is complemented by a white shifter with matching knob for the 4-speed manual.  Instrumentation is by VDO and very light.  There are a speedometer, odometer and little else.

The engine compartment housing the 1.2 is clean and roomy, making work and adjustments straightforward.  Belts, distributor cap and wires are all in well-maintained condition.
