31K km 1988 Mazda RX-7 GXL 5-Speed

It is easy to fall into using superlatives as a habit but if anyone is looking for a stock FC RX7, this might be the best choice around.  A 1988 model in top-level (save for Turbo II) GXL trim, this car has rolled a claimed 30,137 km with no winters.  If it is all that the seller says it is, we would want to know accident and paint history.  These are not mentioned in the ad.

In production from 1986 to 1992, the FC RX7 was derided by some as too obvious a copy of a Porsche 944 in terms of exterior styling.  Ironically, the RX7s are now generally worth more than an equivalent 944, though exceptional 944s are different.  Heck, even Jerry Seinfeld is getting into collectable 944s.

Like all RX7s (and the RX8s that came later), this car is powered by a Wankel rotary engine.  This car’s is a fuel-injected 1.3 litre displacement number, producing around 150 horsepower when new.  The engine bay is as expected for this low-miler.  Power gets to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.

With the GXL trim, interior accessories are power:  windows, locks, mirrors and sunroof.  Other features include a factory anti-theft system and air conditioning.  Seller claims that the car is bone stock and that three-spoke steering wheels really suits it.

The bright red paint is complemented by a neutral grey interior.  There are two seats only and the buckets look to be consistent with the intentions of this car – all business and sporty feel.  The twisted five-spoke factory wheels are only 15” but were well-loved in the ‘80s.  Dual exhaust outlets suit the car’s stance and intention.

Another neat feature of the FC is the headlight set-up.  Common for sports cars of the era, it offers pop-up headlights.  A differentiator from the other who did the same comes in the form of the lenses fixed in place, even with the headlights in the down positions – these lenses enable the driver to “flash to pass” without popping up the headlights.
