Originally a US-market car, this modified 1972 Triumph TR6 Roadster 5-Speed Manual spend time in New York state before the current owner bought it out of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario in 2017. It has since done approximately 2,500 miles evenly over his ownership period based at his rural location about an hour north of Toronto. The powerplant is the original 2.5 litre inline-six engine which gets the power to the rear Konig wheels through a couple of upgrades – the twin SU carburetors and the 5-speed Toyota transmission, literature about which is included in our gallery. Before the owner’s acquisition, the car was refinished in its original Triumph Sienna brown – a finish which won a car show award in 2023, included in our gallery. The Sienna brown presents over a tan interior which shows to be as clean as the paint. The owner commissioned our mobile PPI service and the inspection results are excellent – please review them here.
Features on this modified TR6 include the original Triumph-branded AM radio, radio antenna, fresh air and heater for the cabin, upgraded Konig wheels in the Minilite style and a proliferation of parts – enough to not photograph individually, so please see the video of the parts, all organized/sorted with even a catalogued list included at the end of this detailed listing. Also included are a black parade boot to cover the top when in the down position, a never-used tonneau cover in original packaging also in black and a boat load of service records, service manuals and other manuals/books – photographed in the gallery.
The car is presented in Sienna (Triumph colour 23) and features a bullet-shaped double rear-view exterior mirror on the driver’s door. Complementing the Sienna is a red double pin stripe. The car also features US-specification chrome bumpers front and rear. The black soft top has a tear covered by a waterproof length of tape measuring approximately 1-1/2”, which has worked well for the current owner even when caught in rain a couple of times in his custodianship and who has not prioritized the installation of the Robbins brand new-in-box replacement soft top, which is included in the sale and shown in the parts video. Triplex glass is in place for all three panes.
The upgraded 16” Konig wheels present in the Minilites/Panasport style. They are lined in Continental Pure Contact 205/65 H-rated tires installed by the prior owner, bearing a date code of 2013 and having rolled under 10,000 miles by the owner’s conservative estimate given his 2,500 miles added to the clock. There are disc brakes in front with a drum set-up in the rear. Brake fluid was changed in spring of 2023. Underneath, the owner notes four steel braided brake lines and four Koni shocks. The original 15” steel wheels with centres and beauty rings are included with an older set of Michelin redline tires – see the parts video – with a fifth in place as the spare in the trunk.
The seats are covered in tan vinyl, reupholstered under prior ownership, a close match to the wood veneer dashboard facing. The black dash top is free of cracking and features a small central ashtray. The three-spoke steering wheel shows a Triumph emblem in the centre, as does the wooden shift knob. Triumph-branded rubber mats protect the original carpets underneath, though there is a small hole in the driver’s side carpet. Floors underneath are also shown in our photo gallery. The door of the glove box shows some aging along the layers of wood but no cracking. The original Triumph AM radio works in concert with the external antenna.
The three-spoke wheel fronts instrumentation by SMITHS – there are a 140 MPH speedometer, a 7000 RPM tachometer with 5500 RPM redline. To their left are switches for windshield wipers and washer, to their right gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level and a Lucas gauge for amperage – these being centrally-mounted on the dash. The ignition is below the steering column. Ventilation and heater controls are in place lower, in the centre stack. The five-digit odometer shows under 26,000 miles, believed original by the owner, who has added approximately 2,500 miles. The washer fluid system is pumping intermittently.
The 2.5 litre inline-six was factory rated at 106 horsepower, with 133 lb.-ft. of torque at the ready and and is now fed by the replacement twin SU carburetors. The five-speed Toyota manual was installed with an HVDA conversion kit by Herman Van der Akker, whose related literature appears in the gallery. They combine to drive the rear wheels. In addition to the brake fluid change, the following maintenance items were carried out in the spring of 2024: oil and filter change, new battery, all fittings greased, all fluid levels checked, ignition timing checked, SU carburetors tuned. Other repairs and maintenance carried out under current custodianship consist of brake pads and calipers in Spring 2023 as well as replacement of brake master cylinder, brake safety switch valve and engine valve cover plus installation of new green ignition wires and new platinum tipped spark plugs. The original Stromberg carburetors and air cleaner are included in the sale. For Ontario buyers – the seller believes the TR6 will pass Ontario Safety as it sits, depending on washer pump performance on inspection day.
This 1972 Triumph TR6 Roadster 5-Speed Manual, Modified is available with parade boot, tonneau cover, two covers, two sets of keys, a proliferation of parts (see video) and many books/manuals from the Triumph-enthusiast seven-year owner in Beeton, Ontario.
