1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 4-Speed Manual 4WD – Inspected
Here is a 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 4-Speed Manual 4WD is powered by a 4.2 litre 2F inline six-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Finished in Olive, it features a removable hardtop with power steering and folding inward-facing rear jump seats. It is equipped with light truck tires on what are believed to be the original rims with locking hub feature on the front wheels. This seller made use of our mobile pre-purchase inspection offering, please see the inspector’s report here. As well, the owner recently commissioned an appraisal, the appraiser’s report is included in our gallery and can be accessed at this link.
The 40-Series Land Cruisers are among those built by Toyota for ruggedness and reliability over technology and luxury. Utilitarian equipment abounds; as illustrations, a manual telescoping antenna, dual adjustable exterior mirrors, roll bar, a trailer hitch, tow loops front and rear as well as an aftermarket winch are fitted. The owner acquired this in 2020, and it has been garage-stored during his ownership. He relays that the previous owner is an airplane mechanic.

The olive paint (Toyota paint code 653) shows various levels of patina, please review our gallery for areas that the new owner may or may not want to address. These Land Cruisers have developed a following and are quite valuable in restored condition, though many prefer the look of one that has been put to work over its service life. The stock 15” wheels remain installed and feature locking hubs in front. The older BF Goodrich Radial Mud Terrain T/A white-lettered light truck tires measure 30” x 9.5” and are rated for Mud and Snow. Power steering is equipped and the brakes at all four corners are by drums.
There are two bucket seats up front with non-matching upholstery on the driver’s seat bottom indicating a replacement cover and split by a console with cupholders and storage compartments believed to be aftermarket. On the driver’s seat back there are two split seams and an approximately two-inch tear on the side of the driver’s seat. The Toyota-branded floor cover is black vinyl while the seats match the exterior and door cards are finished with grey vinyl. There are heat and ventilation controls in the centre of the dash complemented by front vent windows, blowers for defrosting the front windows as well as vent doors in the front fenders and fronted by shifters for the manual transmission and four-wheel drive system. In the rear, there are folding rear seats which can be stowed by straps to yield more cargo space. Windows and locks are manually operated. The passenger’s side door lock cylinder is damaged while there is no headliner, please see our gallery. The winch is operated by a controller in the glove box.
The instrumentation is placed behind a three-spoke steering wheel showing Land Cruiser insignia. There is a central 85 MPH / 140 km/h speedometer above gauges for oil pressure, fuel level, coolant temperature and amperage. To their right are warning lights for the hand-operated parking brake and seat belts. The five-digit mechanical odometer within the speedometer gauge glass shows under 11,000, true mileage is unknown.
The 4.2 litre engine is carbureted with a choke control in the dash. Internally named a 2F and featuring an inline-six configuration, the engine drives the rear or all four wheels making use of a four-speed manual transmission and dual-range transfer case. A battery with manufacture date August 2024 is in place under hood. There are photos of the underside in our gallery, with Rough Country-branded shocks in sight.
This 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 4-Speed Manual 4WD is available with one set of keys from the four-year owner in Perth, Ontario.
