1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 5-Speed G50 Manual – SOLD for $68,000

Here is a 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 5-Speed Manual that has been with the same owner since 1996 and is a testament to Porsche air-cooled engine durability.  Properly maintained, they will go and go and go.  This G-body Coupe has had the same custodian since 1996 and this car speaks to how carefully he has maintained the car, the compression test results and leak-down figures shared below are further testament to it.  There are not many cars with odometers reading 400,000 km that can boast results like this 911 can.  This car accumulated many of its miles when the owner lived in the Horseshoe Valley, On area and commuted to the Oakville, On area – lots of easy highway mileage.  Air-cooled 911s have surged in value the last several years and those in unique colours often fetch a premium.  All of the above lead to a complete package that is unique and ready for a new caretaker.

The turquoise paint is striking and likely helped attract some of the trophies pictured when the owner has casually shown this car at events put on by the Porsche Club of America, Upper Canada Region.  Despite the mileage this car has driven, it mostly shows its original finish applied when the car was built in February 1988.  Note that the driver’s door and fender have been repainted; this is consistent with the Carfax linked at “CCC Vital Info” a glass claim, this one for the fender and door repaint and another for $531.  This car continues to show off its period Porsche features:  fog lights on a front valence short of a spoiler (these cars should have both front and rear spoilers, neither, but never one without the other – this one’s smart look is the latter), hydraulic impact absorbing bumpers, rear bumperettes, rear full-width reflector bearing “PORSCHE” script and traditional 15” Fuchs wheels, among others.  The Fuchs are skinned in a staggered set of Kelly Edge performance tires, P205/60 in the front, rears are 215/60 – definitely larger sidewalls than today’s 911s, and a little more forgiving when parking next to a curb; rear tires were installed new this spring, fronts in 2020.  Sunroof is power-operated, all glass is good – Pilkington for the windshield and Sekurit for the rest of the glass.  Emblems and lights are also complete and in good condition.  There is minor stone chipping on the front of the car, incredibly good for the mileage this car has covered.

The interior has also been very well kept over this car’s 35 years of service.  Light grey leather is incredibly free of any rips or tears and is soft to the touch, given the use over the years.  Instrumentation features a centrally-mounted 7000 RPM tachometer with 6200 RPM redline.  To its right are a 260 km/h speedometer with odometer and trip odometer incorporated within and then a clock.  To its left is a combo-gauge for oil pressure as well as water temperature and then another for fuel level and oil temperature.  This 911 is well-equipped and the air conditioning is functional.  Air-cooled cars have never offered air conditioning to the pedigree of a modern Cadillac, so we will say that the a/c blows cool.  Cruise control is on offer, along with power windows, central locking and four-way power bucket seats for both front occupants.  A Momo shift knob has replaced the original and an MEI AM/FM/CD head unit with detachable face plate has been installed.  Black carpets provide contrast and are more practical than were they to match the seats – driver’s floor mat shows wear commensurate with use.  The dashboard is quite presentable and free from cracks – different from many Porsches today of the era – the analog clock remains functional.

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe 5-Speed G50 Manual

With the R/R layout, the key component is found in the rear in the form of a 3.2 litre flat-six engine, Porsche type 930/25.  It retains its unmistakable air-cooled sound and drives the rear wheels through the 5-speed G50.  The 3.2 was rated by the factory at 214 horsepower (5900 RPM) and 195 lb.-ft. of torque (4800 RPM).  Gallops of 0-60 were accomplished in the neighbourhood of 6.4 seconds, though almost any air-cooled 911 owner will talk about the visceral experience superseding any quantitative measures of power.  Even so, a top speed of 240 km/h is nothing to sneeze at.  On the upkeep side of things, the owner has accumulated approximately 83 service records over his span of ownership.  Most recently, the owner got this Carrera ready for the auction by commissioning the following work by his preferred shop, Mantis Autosport, well known in the Greater Toronto Area for its Porsche work:  oil and filter; replacement of torsion bar end support; front wheel bearings replaced; replacement of engine lid struts; replacement of battery ground strap; replacement of alternator belt; and a four-wheel alignment to factory specification.  For Ontario bidders:  given the shop’s inspection, the seller expects this Porsche to pass safety as it sits.  As well, the shop performed compression testing with the following results shared by the owner:
Cylinder 1 185 PSI 9% leakdown
Cylinder 2 185 PSI 10% leakdown
Cylinder 3 185 PSI 10% leakdown
Cylinder 4 185 PSI 8% leakdown
Cylinder 5  185 PSI 6% leakdown
Cylinder 6  190 PSI 7% leakdown
These results speak to an engine in very good condition.
Other work in the past five years, other than tires previously mentioned:
June 2018 Replace oil cooler lines at oil cooler.
April 2020 Replace spark plugs, drain and refill transmission, brake fluid flush.
May 2020 replace axle shaft, replace upper bearing in steering column.

directly from the seller, @shats67the front rubber spoiler has a slight bend to it. I wouldn’t call it a dent and never thought much of it and the 2 people who were here yesterday examined the car thoroughly and did not comment on it.
Hope that helps.

does picture 90 show a dent or is it from an odd angle?

directly from the seller, @shats67, regarding the request for underside photos beyond 167-170:
“I don’t have access to a lift today and probably not tomorrow”.

@TheDiff – Owner confirms paint code L21M, turquoise.

We have added the option code sticker as image 184 and updated the itemization of same in the listing’s text.

the exhaust would be nice to see also. Does the owner know the porsche color code for the exterior and interior?

Can you take a wide photo of the bottom of the car? iphones have a super wide lens on them now, itll get you wide. Looking to see the bottom of the block in one photo and the bottom of the transmission case in another.

@LB911There are photos of the underside, gallery pics numbered 167 through 170. There are also floor photos, 180 – 183.

Good luck, bidders!

Hi Everyone. We have been in touch with seller @shats67 about @P-Unit’s photo requests. Seller is planning to submit photos of the battery tray and of under the carpets today, to supplement those of the underside as in the gallery from number 167 to number 170. We will get new photos posted as soon as we get them.

This has been a great car for me for 27 years. I have always carefully maintained it, never letting things go. I have around 80 invoices and Carfax reports to back this up, and it has never let me down. This is not a garage Queen. Maybe it was an indulgence to use it as a highway commuter, but it made the Hwy. 400 drive much more enjoyable. I am on hand to answer questions in the Comments or through “contact seller” button in “CCC Vital Info”.

Maybe some under carpet photos too please.

Any under body and battery tray pictures?
