The 1100 RT was released by BMW for the 1996 model year, making this the first-year model, and it was a marked improvement from the 100RT it replaced.  It was bumped up in the power department and the fairing was noticeably improved.  It employs BMW’s electronic engine management system.  Its run went through 2001, when the 1150RT was introduced, and it was produced in the BMW Berlin facility.

The engine checks in at 1085 cc for its two cylinders in four-valve Boxer formation.  The four-stroke engine was rated at 90 horsepower (7250 RPM) and 70 lb.-ft. of torque when new.  This ensures comfortable cruising, given its weight of 285 kg.  Redline is at 7500 RPM, bore is 99 mm while stroke is 70.5 mm.  The bike had a top speed of 211 km/h when new and features a five-speed transmission to get the power engaged.  Although known as a cruiser, this RT is not lazy – when new, 0-60 times were 3.9 seconds.  A three-way catalytic converter is employed.

Brembo brakes are in evidence in the gallery and the machine employs an anti-lock system.  Four piston calipers are in place in front, two pistons in the rear, with cross-drilled rotors.  Suspension of the three-part chassis is via Telelever up front and a Paralever swing arm in the rear.  Tires are sized at 120/70ZR17 (F) and 160/60ZR18.

Extensive cargo areas can be seen in the gallery and the bike can accommodate a payload of 205 kg – with cargo areas in the front, rear left, rear centre and rear right; rear compartments have handles – almost the weight of the bike itself without load.  Fuel economy checks in at approximately 3.9 l/100 km when cruising at 90 km/h.  Fuel capacity is 26 litres in the main tank, 6 in the reserve, so range is beyond how long most can ride without a coffee stop.
