2003 Dodge RAM 3500 ST Long Box Cummins Diesel Dually 4WD

Want to be a car collector?  Some in the hobby are going to need a tow vehicle.  This is why we bring you a 2003 Dodge RAM 3500 ST Long Box Cummins Dually 4WD.  The Cummins diesel engines are known for their longevity.  So much so that noted YouTuber Tyler Hoover bought one last year at 996,000 miles (miles, not km) so that he could be the owner with the distinction of driving it over the million-mile mark.  Only a 2500 and not a Dually but the video (linked here) has had over half a million views, which would be a view for every two miles!  The owner of this truck is similarly a Ram Cummins Diesel enthusiast and is ready to let this one go, with another still in his garage.

The fresh dark Fiat red paint is brilliant in the sunshine and defies the reading on the odometer inside, paint was applied in July 2022 and a subtle darkening from flame red; owner advises that there are two paint blemishes.  Chrome appointments contribute to the pop – the bumpers, tubular steps and exhaust tip complement the bright red.  The sturdy looking 17-inch wheels add to the bright work, they are shod in six LT235/80 Transforce All-Terrain tires installed in 2019 and still showing grippy tread.  Owner notes that there is no spare tire.  Badging is intact:  a Ram logo on the big grille, “DODGE”, “RAM” and the Ram logo on the tailgate and, most importantly, Cummins Turbo Diesel emblems on the fenders.  The recently replaced bed is equipped with a Pull Rite brand fifth-wheel hitch, all the better for towing the big loads this 3500 was built for.  In-bed 7-pin harness and fifth wheel vented tailgate are included.  It is also equipped with a conventional tow hitch.  When new, the truck was rated at 15,850 lbs. for towing capacity while the payload capacity rating was 3,030 lbs and GVWR 12,000 lbs.  Up front, the big grille sits about a couple of tow hooks, there are fog lights incorporated into the chrome bumper.  Headlights are new – nice and clear.  Large side mirrors are factory fold up tow mirrors.

The inside is home to comfortable slate grey velour cloth seats widely used by Dodge in this era, three seat belts in the front, three seat belts in the rear.  Windows, locks and mirrors are of the manual variety – likely spec’d by a first owner who knew the miles this truck was going to accumulate and thus free of electrical challenges in those departments.  It is equipped with air conditioning that blows cold after many components were replaced last year, a large arm rest and several storage compartments.  From the driver’s seat, there are black-on-white gauges – large for tachometer and speedometer, flanked by smaller gauges for amperage, fuel, oil pressure and temperature.  There is a column-mounted shifter for the automatic beyond the four-spoke steering wheel emblazoned with Ram crest, lever for the four-wheel drive system – featuring 4HI and 4LO – is on the floor.  Carpet was recently replaced and owner notes that the CD player is non-functional.

The big 5.9 litre Cummins Turbo Diesel inline-six has powered this truck 487,000 km to date.  As set out in the referenced video above, this is not exceptional for a Cummins, those familiar would attest.  When it rolled out of the factory, this truck was rated at 250 horsepower (2900 RPM) and a whopping 460 lb.-ft. or torque, realized at a leisurely 1400 RPM – “born to tow”.  It is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission which can send power to the rear wheels only or to both axles, with the floor-mounted lever.  Within the past two years, the following new parts have been installed:  starter;, clutch fan; A/C Pump, filter and evaporator (cold air); belt tensioner; oil pan; fuel pump; four shocks; four brake calipers; four brake rotors; front and rear flex lines; brake lines are nickel plated, new backing plates front and rear; steering stabilizer; carrier bearing and centre U-joint.  As well, OEM chrome wheel liners; fifth wheel bed rails; link pins; front axle bearings; front coil springs and dampeners; rear bumper with tow hitch; headlights; Westin running boards; 2 new batteries; rebuilt front drive shaft; hydro boost line; driver/passenger sun visors; driver seat cover (OEM); vent shades; front hood deflector and Cummins emblems have all been installed.  When the oil pan was replaced, the lower bearing was checked and endorsed – there is no blow-by.  The truck is Ontario certified and comes with an Ontario commercial vehicle yellow sticker valid through February 2024.  Service history since 2010 is set out on the Carfax (see link to it in “CCC Vital Info”).  There is a collision noted as “minor damage” on the Carfax, having occurred in December 2011.  The Carfax also notes two open recalls, these can be remedied free of charge at any franchise Chrysler Canada dealership.
