No Reserve 38 Years Owned 1987 Porsche 928 S4 5-Speed Manual

Here is a 1987 Porsche 928 S4, finished in black over a burgundy leather interior – a first-year S4 and the biggest upgrade of the 928 in its 1978 through 1995 run.  This vehicle is powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted 5.0-litre V8 paired with a five-speed manual transaxle, sending power to the rear wheels.  The odometer currently reads under 353,000 km, though according to the owner and his detailed Excel record of maintenance over the past 38 years, the actual distance travelled is 100,000 km below that, plausible given that odometer problems are somewhat common on Porsches of the era.  This example has been with its owner for 38 years and was a European Tourist delivery when purchased in 1987, as supported by photos of the Porsche-stamped records in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.  Factory equipment includes a limited-slip differential, sports suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers, a sunroof, heated 12-way power front seats, and a high-fidelity sound system.  It is offered with two keys, a fitted car cover, and the original owner’s, Service/Warranty and Maintenance manuals.

The exterior is finished in its original black paint, with the seller confirming that no repaint has been performed during ownership, other than on a replacement front bumper cover installed in the ‘80s. Exterior equipment includes integrated fog lights, pop-up headlamps, a rear window wiper, body-coloured mirror caps and a body-colour rear spoiler. Porsche badging is retained at the front hood and across the rear fascia, the latter complemented by a no charge option 928S4 decal. Body imperfections without paint damage are noted on each rear quarter panel while there is paint upset on the front bumper cover. The Carfax report itemizes an insurance report of approximately $4,200 in 2022, following an incident of a tree branch falling on the hood. An insurance adjuster’s visit while the branch was still sitting on the car, see photos in the gallery. After he engaged an arborist to carefully remove the branches, the owner advises that only some pin prick-sized marks were left by the branch and he repaired it himself with some touch-up paint. The resultant imperfections are shown in our car review video linked opposite the CCC Vital Info section, above.

Factory “flat-disc” alloy wheels known to the Porsche set as 7-slots or manhole covers are mounted with Cooper RSA-3 tires in staggered 225/50 and 245/50 sizing and complemented by Porsche emblemed centre caps.  We note from an OK Tire invoice that the tires were installed at approximately 246,000 km in July 2017.  Braking is by four-wheel discs, with ABS, as standard on the S4 model.  The car was also equipped with sports suspension out of the factory, as set out in the Porsche options decal still appearing in the rear hatch, decoded below and photographed in our gallery.  Underside images are also included in the gallery, along with views of the suspension and wheel condition.

The cabin is upholstered in burgundy leather across the seats with colour-matched dashboard, door cards, centre console, and carpeting.  Cracks on the dash are observed.  Power-adjustable heated front bucket seats feature integrated controls on the seat bases; cracking is noted on the outer driver’s seat bolsters, back and bottom.  These imperfections, including those on the dash cover, are best reviewed on our Review Video, linked opposite “CCC Vital Info” in this listing.   Comfort and convenience features include air conditioning which the seller notes is blowing cold, central locking, power windows, and a factory Blaupunkt stereo system (the head unit currently not operational per the seller due to a fuse).  The rear cargo area retains its factory cargo net, under which are found spare tire and, lower, the battery.

The driver is presented with a leather-wrapped four-spoke OEM steering wheel and a gauge cluster centred by a tachometer and a 300 km/h speedometer.  Supplementary instrumentation includes readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage.  Switchgear for the climate control system is positioned in the centre stack along with audio controls.  Noted flaws include an inoperative passenger window switch, wear on the driver’s seat, and two holes in the rear footwells, the latter will keep it from an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.

This vehicle’s powerplant is a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, part of the revised S4 generation introduced in 1987.  Factory ratings were 316 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque when new.  The engine is equipped with Bosch electronic fuel injection.  The seller advises that details of past maintenance are contained in the included service manuals, the Carfax and supplementary spreadsheet.  Some receipts are in our gallery.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle.  The transmission retains its factory shifter, as shown in the gallery.  According to the seller, known upcoming maintenance includes addressing the passenger window switch.  Otherwise, the car is presented as mechanically complete and consistent with its mileage and age.

I would love to come see it, unfortunately I am out of the country at the moment.

The last timing belt change was June 11. 2018 at 250,245 km, about 2000 km ago.
I normally want the date format to be month/day/year.  But sometimes Excel just would not let me do what I wanted and for eg insisted on year/month/day However the rows are in strict chronological order regardless of what Excel made me do. .Since the Spreadsheet was for my own record keeping I just accepted its truculence and moved on.

May be minor leak from power steering, Otherwise no leaks. If you want, there are a couple days left, come over to check out the leaks and have a look underneath.

I did not drive the car in winter and always parked on pavement. Years passed and the underside has rusted. Sort of like our own bodies ageing from perfection to something less. There are two holes – at the rear seat footwells on each side. A body man would easily fix these. CCC took the underside pics. I don’t have any more.

My 928S4 has been so much fun and pleasure. I used it as my three season daily driver for many years. I loved getting in it and driving around on business. What an amazing combination of performance, comfort and practicality. So much fun to drive around. Made traffic bearable. And, on the open road ! Well it sure deserved all the accolades it got at inception as the greatest grand touring machine ever. What a match. Supercar and magnificent grand tourer ! And of course, beautiful as well. How about that – a machine that has it all, beauty, power, useabiliity and awesomeness. The time has come after thirty-eight years. I am sure going to miss her. Oh well, off to a new home with some lucky guy.

Hello again, more questions! Are there any fluid leaks and does the ABS system work? Also, the dates at the top of your spreadsheet in pic 116 don’t really make sense. Please confirm if the last timing belt change was in 2006? Thank you.

Hello,
The OK Tire invoice indicates that there is excessive rust on the frame rails, lift points and driver side back plate. There are also holes in the floor. Could you please expand on how rusty the underneath is and provide more pics of the underneath?
Thanks.
