One Family Owned 63K km 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380SL – SOLD for $13,000

This is a One Family-Owned 1984 Mercedes-Benz 380SL Convertible with under 63,000 km since new. It is original in many respects and is powered by the original 3.8 litre V8 engine which is mated to a 4-Speed automatic transmission. It is finished in Astral silver and comes with a matching hardtop. The cabin is blue, as is the soft top. Highlights of its specifications include 14” Bundt alloy wheels (with a matching unused full-size spare in new condition found in the trunk, mounted with the original Michelin full size tire), automatic climate control, power windows, centrally-controlled locks, Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/cassette with clock, power antenna cruise control and fog lights. The collector will be interested in not only the original owner’s manual with other original booklets, the warranty plate but also the unworn soft transparent plastic attaché holding them showing the Mercedes three-pointed star and believed original itself. Tool roll is also on hand, and we have included the clean Carfax on this listing – see “CCC Vital Info”.

The car is finished in Astral Silver (Astralsilber Metallic, M-B paint code 735) with a matching colour removable hardtop. A blue convertible soft top matching the interior trim is stowed below the hardtop. On the exterior are also found the North American style headlight setup, complemented by fog lights below the chrome front bumper. The rear bumper is also finished in chrome and both front and rear bumpers are protected by bumperettes in black vinyl, which also stretches the length of each bumper.

Bundt alloy wheels finished in silver are in place with Michelin tires the original style of the car. Given the tread of the tire, we suspect they are not original but do not attest to the age of the tires. This car was built with power steering, power brakes with discs at all four corners as well as an independent suspension.

In the cabin are found two bucket seats finished in blue MB-Tex. The cabin is finished in blue throughout, including door cards, dashboard, console and carpets. Wood veneer decorates the console and centre stack. Amenities include the Becker head unit, temperature gauge for the exterior, cruise control, automatic climate control and power windows.

The 3.8L V8 was factory rated at 155 horsepower (4750 RPM) with 196 lb.-ft. of torque, achieved at 2750 RPM. Fuel is delivered by a mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system. A Mercedes three-pointed star can be seen on the muffler in our gallery photos. The rear wheels are driven via a four-speed automatic transmission. The fuel pump was replaced about 100 km ago along with the fuel filter and the current Interstate brand battery was installed – the 2021 work order from a shop known in Ottawa for quality work on European cars is in the gallery. For Ontario buyers – Current owner believes it will pass Ontario safety as it is offered.

This was my dad’s car. He babied it since before I was born and it never saw winter. I’ve got three little kids and can’t put them in the “back seat” of a two-seater roadster like he did back in the day. 😎

I had many dreams of taking it out for long drives in the summers but reality and time constraints kicked in, so I’m hopeful it will be properly enjoyed by someone who will put more than 20km a year on it!
