Original Owner 1983 Datsun 280ZX GL 5-Speed Manual, Restored SOLD for $13,666

Here is a restored 1983 Datsun 280ZX 5-Speed Manual, being offered by its original owner and finished in Nugget Gold Metallic over a tan interior with contrasting trim.  This S130 is powered by a 2.8-litre inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission and marks the final year of manufacture of the 280ZX and, thus, a straight six engine in the fabled Z-car.  The seller reports that an engine rebuild was commissioned approximately ten years ago, at which time the odometer was reset, now showing under 70,000 kilometres. This 280ZX is now offered with three keys, T-Top accessories, and a car cover.  We include a Carfax report on the listing.  While it does show damage in 2022, it is in an amount of under $200.

The car has received three full re-sprays: in 2001, 2009, and most recently in 2020, a glass-out refinish in its original shade of Nugget Gold Metallic (Nissan code 101, as found on the data plate under hood, photo in gallery, also in the gallery is the invoice for the paint job). The exterior features integrated colour matched bumpers and driver’s side mirror.  T-top roof panels are equipped and shown in the gallery along with their matching padded covers and sunshades for optional use when in place.  Black lower cladding, side mouldings, and bumper trim are fitted, with badging in place at the nose and front fenders. The seller notes that the lock mechanism on the passenger door is temperamental when operated with a key.  Other exterior details are presented in the gallery, including close-ups of lenses, body seams, and glass markings.

This Datsun rides on factory 14-inch alloy wheels with turbine-style centres wrapped in 205/70R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires date-coded 2022 as shown in the photo gallery. The braking system is power assisted with discs at all four wheels.

The interior is configured for two occupants whose seats are upholstered in tan velour (trim code C for the GL trim) with contrasting centre console and trim. The cabin includes manually operated windows, a three-spoke steering wheel, and analog gauges. 

Instrumentation includes a 200 km/h speedometer, 7000 RPM tachometer with 6400 RPM red line, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. Additional gauges mounted centrally include oil pressure, voltage, and a standard quartz movement analog clock, though the clock is currently inoperable.

This Z-car’s powerplant is the original 2.8-litre inline-six-cylinder engine factory rated at 145 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. The engine was rebuilt approximately ten years ago, according to the seller. At the time of the rebuild, the odometer was reset and has since logged under 70,000 kilometres.  Seller posits that the odometer was under 130,000 km at the time the odometer was reset, meaning total mileage of under 200,000 km. Given the replacement, this car is presented as TMU (Total Mileage Unknown).  As a testament to the owner’s 42-year attachment to this Z-car, an article submitted to the Toronto Star when the seller lived in the city is included in the gallery.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The stock shifter and pedal set are shown in the gallery. Given recent repairs, the owner believes it would pass an Ontario safety as it sits.  Beyond the 2022 date-coded tires, seller mentions the following repairs since 2020, less than 4,000 km ago:  replacement of muffler, exhaust; alternator replacement; clutch replacement; T-top seals replacement; transmission fluid flush and fill; engine air filter and new lift supports for the rear hatch.  Battery is date coded 2021 and other repairs and maintenance are set out on the Carfax – notably front and rear brakes in 2016, approximately 4,000 km ago.  There is also a recent appraisal for the car in the gallery, setting value at $22,500.
