Restored 1968 Jaguar E-Type

Series 1.5 2+2 – *Inspected*

Here is a restored 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series 1.5 2+2 available from the 10-year owner who has added 4,000 miles to the clock and maintained it himself in the home shop shown in our photo gallery. It was dispatched to New York in April of 1968 according to the Jaguar Heritage Certificate also included in the photo gallery. A restoration completed some 20-plus years ago has the car refinished in a red from the original Pale Primrose Yellow. A louvered fibreglass Series I-style bonnet was fitted, with Series I-appropriate headlights complete with glass covers. The interior is black, including black leather upholstery on all four seats. Ontario bidders, please note: the car will be sold with an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.  The seller opted for the CCC mobile pre-purchase inspection with his seller package, the PPI report is linked here and included in our gallery.  Another link: a reminder that we have Buyer Financing available, O.A.C.

Authentic Jaguar knock-off 15” wire wheels are in place, secured by “three blunts” as mandated for the North American market for 1968, mounted with 185/15 Coker red line radial tires, S-speed rated. The Coker tires were installed nine years back, with approximately 4,000 miles travelled, except a matching replacement installed six years ago. An older unmatched, mounted spare is stowed in the dedicated rear storage area. Braking was overhauled recently. It is by a four-wheel disc system, with inboard-mounted rear units and front calipers.

The cabin was covered in black upholstery at the factory. Amenities include tinted glass, a JVC AM/FM/cassette stereo, black rocker switches for vehicle functions, a headliner replaced in 2019, and shoulder belts for the front seat occupants. The owner fabricated a pair of air flow deflectors that snap on to open door windows to improve air flow and cool the cabin on warm touring days.

The three spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Smiths instrumentation that includes a 6000 RPM tachometer with 5500 RPM red line, a 160 MPH speedometer and centre stack-mounted aftermarket auxiliary displays for voltage, oil pressure and water temp. Fuel level gauge and analog clock are by Smiths. The five-digit odometer shows under 74,000 miles, though true mileage is unknown.

The owner advises that the 4.2 litre inline-six with overhead camshafts runs strong with good compression though he mentions it does leak some oil from the front and rear main seals and that there can be oil consumption from spirited driving.  Carburetors were rebuilt in winter ’21-’22 by Joe Curto on Long Island.  The IRS was rebuilt in 2017.

There are several other mechanical upgrades. A CoolCat radiator has been fitted as has a transmission cooler with fan by Summit Racing, the transmission was adjusted some seven years back. This Series 1.5 has a 123ignition electronic ignition system and the differential was geared to 3.07 when it was rebuilt by a specialty shop in Cleveland (from 3.54). In 2024, the master cylinder and brake booster were upgraded, with stainless steel flex lines having been installed all around in 2017 with the IRS rebuild. There is a small tachometer under the dash that is electronic with digital display, it was installed after an upgrade caused the stock tachometer read about 600 RPM high; Martin Robey remote brake bleeders are in place at all four corners and the blower fan has been upgraded to a Fiero unit. The owner will include documentation for all of the service and maintenance during his ownership, as well as some preceding his custodianship.

The E-Type’s drive wheels are in the rear, with a three-speed automatic sending the power from the inline-six. The original radiator is included as are the standard distributor and various other small parts – see the tub containing them in the gallery. Documentation in the gallery includes the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, setting out date of build, that it was shipped to New York as well as codifying serial numbers and factory colours.

I have enjoyed owning this beautiful car for almost 10 years. I took my time fixing and improving the mechanical aspects over a 6 year period. It is now a reliable car and I have no qualms driving it all over SW Ontario to the many classic car shows. Let me know if you have any questions or want to see it. Alfred
