Restored, Modified 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe with 454 and 5-Speed Manual
This 454-powered 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe 5-Speed Manual has been treated to a complete restoration with considerable modifications to improve it. It is a red-over-red coupe that was acquired by the seller’s spouse in 2008 as a birthday gift for him. Soon after, the professional restoration began, refinishing the body, replacing the roof, floor and trunk pans, fenders, and quarter panels on the exterior. Inside, the interior was reupholstered. And under the hood a 454 cubic-inch V8 was installed with a Tremec five-speed manual transmission and a 12-bolt rear axle with a limited-slip differential.  Other treatments include a cowl induction hood, a rear spoiler, 18″ Rally-style wheels – a nod to original first-generation Camaro wheels at modern diameter, a Detroit Speed front subframe with tubular control arms, a four-link rear suspension, adjustable coilovers, power Baer four-wheel disc brakes, tubular exhaust headers, MSD electronic ignition, power steering, a Hurst shifter and an aftermarket digital stereo.  This is originally a US-market car and the owner has retained the former US title.

This second-year Camaro left the factory in Matador Red (RR) and was repainted soon after current owner’s acquisition.  Details include a cowl induction hood, a rear spoiler, 454 and Z/28 tribute badging, chrome bumpers, bright metal wheel arch trim and rocker moldings, dual mirrors, and an electric wiper motor.  The seller advises that the roof, floor and trunk pans, fenders, and quarter panels were replaced during the refurbishment under his ownership.  One scratch in the paint is noted and shown up close in the gallery.
Staggered chrome 18″ period-Chevrolet-Rally-style wheels are skinned in Goodyear Eagle GT tires measuring 225/40 fore and 255/40 in the rear.  The car features power steering, a Detroit Speed front subframe, tubular front control arms, a parallel four-link rear suspension, and adjustable coilovers at all four corners. Braking is handled by power-assisted Baer calipers over drilled and slotted rotors beneath all four wheels.
Inside, the front bucket seats and rear bench have been reupholstered in red vinyl. They are complemented by a dashboard, door cards and carpeting in matching red.  The centre stack and console are trimmed in simulated wood grain. Other features on the inside include a heater, three-spoke Grant wood-rimmed steering wheel, Hurst shifter for the 5-speed, Camaro-branded floor mats, lap belts, polished door sills and a retro-look Chevy-branded digital stereo with CD input capability and aftermarket speakers. The 120 MPH speedometer and 7000 RPM tachometer with 6000 RPM redline and clock are mounted with the steering wheel while other instrumentation is included in the centre console. The five digit odometer shows under 600 miles, the distance travelled since the restoration, when the odometer was replaced with a new unit. True mileage is unknown.
The clean engine bay houses the 454 cubic-inch V8 crate engine. The owner advises that it is rated at 425 horsepower. It features an aluminum intake manifold, a four-barrel Holley carburetor, MSD electronic ignition, and tubular exhaust headers. An aluminum radiator is in place and works in concert with an electric fan. The transmission getting the power to the rear wheels is a Tremec five-speed manual unit, complemented by a 12-bolt rear axle and 3.53-to-1 limited slip differential. The aftermarket dual exhaust pipes end fore of the rear axle. The oil pan is shallow and, combined with the stock dipstick, implies that oil reading will be inaccurate unless either is changed. All were installed under current ownership. An oil change was completed this autumn in preparation for the auction. Goodyear Eagle GT tires have travelled the distance shown on the odometer, they are W-speed rated.

FROM THE SELLER:
Hi Gents,
Â
Welcome to my auction. This was the car of my dreams. Once I found out all that was wrong with it I knew I would only be happy having a professional doing the work.
Â
After over a year in the shop and north of 6 digits in costs I was able to bring her home. Getting her out was problematic because of Alberta’s short season, gravel roads, a pure fear it would get scratched and some health problems for my wife making it near impossible for her to ride in, then the car became my Garage Queen.
Â
if you are looking for a classic car, restored with every detail taken into consideration and all features ready to hit the road, this could be your baby too.

Jim
Welcome to my auction.
This car was my dream come true. It was gifted to me by my wife and daughters for my 50th birthday. I wanted to do the work myself but when I started it was revealed that as much due diligence as my wife did, she had bought a very crippled mess. I took it to a very reputable restoration guy (Reflections on 66th). Every piece taken off revealed new problems. After being in the shop for over a year, my baby was finally finished and in my drivewayÂ
Unfortunately, if I had known that it would be so hard to make time to enjoy it, between the short Canadian season, work, life and a recently disabled wife, I would never have never done the rebuild to start with.Â
My loss will definitely be someone’s gain.
Feel free to ask me anything about the car or the restoration. Jim
