Sub-80K km 1982 Porsche 928 – Inspected

Here is a sub-80K km 1982 Porsche 928 we got to see up close when we showcased it in our booth at the Porsche Club of America Upper Canada Region Concours d’Elegance Sunday, August 25, 2024. It met the approval of show goers, many of whom mentioned that they follow CCC and subscribe to our daily update email. The biggest distinguishing feature of this car is its low mileage, under 80,000 documented kilometres (a Canadian market car). Another interesting feature is that the owner ordered a mobile PPI in his seller package so the inspector’s report is available here. Lastly, for Ontario buyers, the car comes with a valid Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.

The current owner purchased the car in 2015. He is the second owner, having driven the car in fine weather only approximately 8,000 km over his ownership. The car wears its original paint, save for some touch-ups details below, in Mocha Brown, “moccaschwarz” (Porsche code 451). The interior is a matching brown and the car was optioned with full leather. After it suffered from some shrinking, the dash cover is a matching replacement unit in leatherette with contrasting stitch. This 928 is powered by the original 4.5 litre V8 engine and this was factory rated at 231 horsepower, which gets to the rear wheels via a 3-Speed automatic transaxle. Please see our videos for demonstrations of how the engine starts and runs – frequent visits (on an at least annual basis) for maintenance and repairs to a Porsche specialty shop well known in the Toronto area are in clear evidence. A key item to mention on maintenance is that the timing belt was replaced in 2021; components in the cooling and exhaust systems were also replaced at that time, other more recent maintenance is covered below.

The 928 featured a tool kit from the factory stowed behind a vertical panel in the hatch, this car’s tool kit is complete – you will see this in our Car Reviews podcast for the car, and in the gallery. Other notable features are the stock Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette stereo, there is even the original Porsche cassette describing various operating procedures for this 928. The familiar period 16” phone dial wheels original to the car remain. There is an air conditioner that blows cold, power adjustable seats and a power sunroof on offer to complement the other power accessories in the interior. The owner is including a spare set of matching colour OEM front carpets. The underside of the hatch carpet shows signs of wear, visible in our Car Reviews podcast.

The car formerly wore paint protection film (PPF) on the lower surfaces. In 2021, this was removed and the surfaces below it were recovered and refinished. This is also shown up close in our Car Reviews podcast. There were some dents in the rear hatch that were also repaired at the time and a strut to hold the hatch in the up position was replaced. The power antenna and the motor to operate it were replaced in 2022, this is demonstrated functioning in one of our videos below.

The phone dials wear Dunlop Signature Sport V-rated radials. They measure 225/50 all around and were installed in 2015, approximately 8,000 km ago. Brake calipers are painted red and the front rotors are vented. In the past year, brake fluid was replaced and a dust boot for the right ball joint was replaced.

Both front bucket seats are power-operated. They are trimmed in the original brown leather which remains in very good condition. The rest of the interior is brown in colour; all of it is original, save for the dash cover which has been replaced with a leatherette item accented by contrasting stitching. The automatic climate control shows temperatures in Celsius to indicate a Canadian market car, a/c blows cold. The car is also equipped with power windows, central locking, cruise control and a power sunroof. The VDO analog clock in the centre stack functions, a replacement item in 2023.

The car is equipped with large gauges for a 270 km/h speedometer and 7800 RPM tachometer, the latter with a 6000 RPM redline. From the cockpit, these appear aft of the stock four-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with “928” embossed on the horn pad. The speedo and tach are flanked by a fuel and coolant temperature gauge on the left, oil pressure and voltage meter to the right. The six digit odometer below the speedometer reads under 80,000 km.

The 4.5 litre V8 engine was factory rated at 231 horsepower, accomplished at 5500 RPM. The torque rating out of the factory was 265 lb.-ft., realized at 4000 RPM. This 928’s engine compartment remains fresh: in 2021 the timing belt, water pump, fuel pump, alternator, cooling fan switch, thermostat were replaced. Out back the mufflers were also replaced in 2021.

This Sub-80K km 1982 Porsche 928 – Inspected is available with three sets of keys, spare OEM front carpets, a clean Carfax report, service records report since new, original owner’s manual and log book as well as an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate from the nine-year owner in Toronto, Ontario.
