The Boxster Roadster was released as a 1997 model to critical acclaim, many suggest that it had a hand in saving Porsche at a time when the company abandoned the transaxle cars and went to a water-cooled set-up for the trademark 911. The original Boxster came with a flat-six engine inspired by the 911, displacing 2.5 litres and producing 201 horsepower. For 2000, the base engine’s displacement was increased and the “S” was released – some key characteristics of the “S” were its larger 3.2 litre engine factory rated at 250 horsepower and a six-speed for the manual transaxle offering rather than the base’s 5-speed. Spot the “S” by its dual-exit exhaust from the factory rather than the single oval-shaped exit with which the base model was equipped.
This 2001 Boxster “S” Roadster is finished in Speed Yellow over Black full leather, which, in Porsche parlance, means that the dash and partial door cards are covered in leather, the latter with contrasting stitching. It is powered by a 3.2 litre flat-six cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transaxle. The car comes with a black power soft top, OEM 18-inch Sport Design wheels, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), cruise control, an automatically-deploying-at-speed rear spoiler which can also be controlled from the cockpit, power heated seats and automatic climate control – air conditioner blows cold. Porsche Product Specifications document, Owner’s Manual and other original factory documentation come along with the car, these are photographed in the gallery.
The car is finished in its original paint, Speed Yellow in colour. Paint meter readings are included in the gallery, all readings are 5.0 mm. The underside of the car, extensively photographed with photos in the gallery, is equally clean – speaking to no winters and only the occasional rainfall experienced before the car got home to its garage, always stored in a heated garage. The black soft top is power-operated from the cockpit. There are side air intakes feeding the mid-ship mounted engine, roll hoops and speed-activated rear spoiler are equipped. Supplementing the sporty impressions are the Speedster rear, Speed Yellow Seat Belts and Sport Package.
The 18” Sport Design wheels are complemented by coloured crests, which point down at the valve stems. Tires by Accelera are 651 Sport and were installed in 2021, showing date codes of 2019 and 2021 and tread depths of 8/32” at all four corners. Brakes are a four-piston caliper ABS set up. Close-ups of the four cross-drilled rotors are included in the gallery. The 250 horsepower engine was factory-rated for 225 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transaxle.
Inside the cabin, the power-operated heated seats are covered in black leather. With the Full Leather option, the black leather extends to the dashboard cover and door cards. A removable wind deflector is included while audio is by the OEM Porsche-branded CR-220 unit with AM/FM/CD functionality. Further accessories are in the form of Porsche Stability Management (PSM), automatic climate control (a/c blows cold), cruise control; cup holders and CD storage containers are retractable. A Boxster “S” emblem sits at the base of the centre stack, the console surfaces are in the same Speed Yellow as the exterior.
The three-spoke steering wheel contains an airbag and sits in front of a centrally mounted 8000 RPM tachometer with 7200 RPM redline flanked to its left by a 300 km/h analog speedometer complemented by a digital readout and to the right, water temperature and fuel gauges as well as a digital clock all in the same pod. Under the tach sits a six-character digital odometer reading under 35,000 km as well as a trip odometer. There is a service log since new appearing on the gallery.
At the aforementioned Concours d’Elegance event, this Boxster “S” Roadster won not only its class but also the Judges’ Award, their preferred choice among the 250+ cars entered in the event. Please note that the photo heading this page was originally taken for the cover of Provinz, the Region’s monthly magazine, to announce the car’s victories at the Concours, see the image of the magazine in the gallery. Trophies are photographed in the gallery; however, they are not included in the sale. While the car does retain its original IMS bearing, oil analysis reports from both 2019 and 2024 are included in the gallery, showing no evidence of bearing breakdown. Similarly, the oil filter from annual oil changes was opened and inspected with consistently uneventful results. Owner relays that the car is all original beyond the tires and fluids.
