45K-mile 1999 Jaguar XK8 Convertible

On offer is a 45K mile 1999 Jaguar XK8 Convertible.  This is a U.S.-market car which has spent its first six years in Florida, the 2005-dated Canada Certification label is in the driver’s door jamb to signify an above-board importation.  An inspection of the body and underside supports this as there is no sign of rust.  The owner is ready to sell because the car gets very little use as part of his crowded garage.  However, he ran out of time before listing day and will be including a full detail – wash, wax, interior shampoo – in advance of delivery to the new owner.  As well, he has a new trunk floor on order and it is expected before auction-end.  The original was damaged in storage last winter after being removed from the car for easy access to the battery, which is housed in the trunk – below the floor.

This Jaguar is finished in an understated Meteorite Silver Metallic (Jaguar code MDX).  The XK8 was released for the 1997 model years, having replaced the XJS after its long run and coming with a 25% stiffer chassis.  The car wears its original 17” wheels with a matching set of Sailun Atrezzo H-rated tires with good tread depth installed, they are 225/55.  The premise of the XK8’s body was for a much cleaner look than the XJS, achieved with the flush-mounted headlights, clean fascia and tapered tail all combining for a striking shape from front to back.  Over the years, the body has accumulated some scrapes and dings, they are on display in the gallery, images 66 to 69 and we considered these with the seller in coming up with the reserve price.  The car comes with a clean Carfax report – no collisions claims – though a potential mileage discrepancy is noted and appears to be a Canadian service tech reporting a miles odometer reading as a km odometer reading in 2019.

Inside, it is pure Jaguar.  Connolly leather and wood veneer are in generous supply.  Oatmeal-colour (AGD) leather is rich and soft to the touch and does show some wear commensurate with age – no rips or tears, however.  The car is very well-appointed.  The wood and leather four-spoke steering wheel offers controls for the audio system and Jaguar-specific mobile phone.  The console surrounding the J-gate automatic and easy-to-shift-manually shifter is surrounded by the veneer console with controls for audio, HVAC, power-operated top, fog lights and traction control at hand – air conditioning blows cold.  Instrumentation is presented in fonts exuding class – beyond the steering wheel is a 170-mph speedometer flanked by a 7500 RPM tachometer and fuel gauge.  Accessory gauges are centrally mounted, including oil pressure and voltmeter surrounding an elegant Jaguar analog clock.  The leather-covered arm rest contains cup holders which pop out to an in-use position

Power comes in the form of a 32-valve 4.0 litre V8 engine which was rated at 290 horsepower (6100 RPM) and 290 lb.-ft of torque (4250 RPM) when new which is housed in a well-kept engine bay.  This mill has powered the car to its 45,000 miles from new, approximately 72,500 km.  Hooking up the refined British snort to the rear wheels is a five-speed automatic transmission engaged with the J-Gate shifter.  The convertible needed three-tenths of a second more than the coupe to complete a 0-60 romp, accomplishing it in 7 seconds flat; top speed is governed to 248 km/h.  Underneath, the XJS-derived platform is shared with no less an automotive icon than the Aston Martin DB7 and features Jaguar’s second-generation independent rear suspension, proven previously in the XJ40 generation of XJ6.  In the XK8’s instance there is an adaptive suspension at work.  The underside of this car reflects its exclusively fair weather use – only the most minor surface rust is in evidence.

There is some service history noted on the Carfax.  Most recently, in 2021 and within the past 1,000 miles, a comprehensive service was carried out:

  • Water pump replacement;

  • Coolant flush/replacement;

  • Radiator hoses replacement;

  • Hose clamp replacement;

  • Thermostat replacement;

  • Manifold gaskets replacement;

  • Throttle body cleaned and serviced; and

  • Knock sensors replaced.

Owner has not had the car Ontario certified but expects that it will pass as is.  If he were keeping it, he would have an alignment check done next.
