Orange paint reflects great care and recent application from the restoration.  During the restoration process, any metal showing rust was replaced with new panels and pans.  The car retains its original data tag – paint code is 3D, medium blue, while body code 63D denotes sportsroof (known generally for this car as a fastback) with standard interior and bucket seats.  Rich orange paint is complemented by black stripes and trim in the period Mach 1 Mustang style.  The car retains an appearance loyal to originality with nothing in the way of personalization.  Staggered American Racing chrome wheels are shod in raised white letter Cooper Cobra tires, 235/60R15 up front and 255/60R15 in the rear, new in 2018/1,000 miles ago.  The scoops on the Nasa hood show off the big engine’s displacement with a 351 badge on each side, the powerplant’s growl can be heard in the videos.  Chin spoiler, rear window louvers, decklid spoiler and dual chrome pipes are further features reflecting the early ‘70s before the oil crisis brought on the malaise era.

The interior is black and also redone with the restoration.  Trim code AA shows as Black Corinthian vinyl as primary, Black Ruffino vinyl for the secondary material.  The door cards are presentable, though the owner is including a new, uninstalled set with the sale.  For instrumentation, a fuel gauge is flanked by a speedometer and factory tachometer beyond the steering wheel, with gauges for oil pressure, alternator and temperature in the centre console.  Below the console gauge cluster are HVAC controls and an analog clock, currently non-functional.  A modern Pioneer head unit is in place with newer speakers to do it justice.  The owner has added a modern solution for cupholders using the ashtray as its anchor.  Door windows are operated by manual cranks and there is a remote mirror control on the driver’s door.  Black vinyl buckets are in nice shape free of tears and the simulated three-spoke woodgrain steering wheel with Mustang logo centre provides contrast.  Door jambs and bottoms are very clean, inspection does not remotely raise the thought of rust.  Aftermarket Mustang-embroidered floor mats sit on top of factory-style mats.  The car is equipped with an aftermarket reverse camera system, the owner has never used it, its monitor is currently sitting in the centre console.

Under the hood, the 351 Cobra Jet and its surroundings are very clean.  The engine when new was good for 285 horsepower at 5400 RPM – this one is upgraded with Quench chamber heads, 11:1 high compression pistons, though built to stock spec., .030 over.  A bonus for modern times:  the engine runs on regular gasoline, as indicated by the label on the air cleaner.  It is mated to a C-6 automatic transmission, Ford factory code “U” – three speeds and transmitting power to the big rear wheels.  Air cleaner and valve covers were sandblasted and repainted in Ford blue during the restoration.  From the factory, the car had a 2.75:1 standard differential (code 2), though this has been upgraded to a Posi-Trac diff – further upgrades are 28 spline, 3.50 rear gears and Petronix ignition.  Dual exhaust pipes are chrome-tipped and give a true muscle car tone with powerful growl – it can be heard on the videos.  More recently, the car has been treated to new head gaskets, a new intake and new headers.

The underside of the car is as clean as one would expect for a car selected for such an exhaustive restoration.  Photo gallery features four shots of the undercarriage reflecting zero corrosion and a generally new appearance.  The car has travelled approximately 1,000 miles since the restoration was completed in 2018.  During this time it has been well treated and the owner expects it will need nothing if the new owner is in Ontario and needs an Ontario Safety Standards Certificate.  When we asked the owner what service he would carry out next, he replied that he would fix the clock.
