1985 BMW M635CSi 5-speed Manual, Modified – Euro model
Up for auction is a 1985 BMW M635CSi, first retailed in Germany and imported to the U.S. in 1986. It remained in Georgia and Florida until 2010 – when it was imported to Canada by the seller with approximately 120,000 km on the clock. The M635CSi is a model which was not available new in North America; BMW uses the “M” designation for specially modified higher trim model, indicating its Motorsport division – thus, M635CSi. A European model E24 (internal BMW body designation), its engine is the BMW M88/3 – a direct descendant of and more powerful than the M88 that was used in the vaunted BMW M1. Its performance also far exceeds that of the 1985 North American market 635CSi (no “M”) – the car available in our auction was rated at 282 horsepower when new, compared to 218 horsepower for the domestic 635CSi. More details are available below but this car is modified and horsepower today exceeds that original 282 rating. Cosmetically, the wraparound bumpers on this Euro model distinguish it from its North American market counterpart.

The exterior retains original paint on the metal in black with a matching aftermarket body kit. It shows off a fresh buff / detail and has never been winter driven. During the seller’s ownership tenure, the car has always been indoors and covered when not in use – he is including the custom fit satin cover with the sale. The front air dam and rear bumper cover were repainted in 2019 (work order in the gallery). The ground effects bring an aggressive look and accentuate the E24’s “shark” nickname. The refinished 18” M-Parallel wheels reinforce the strong look, shod in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires with 2016 date codes and approximately 5,000 km of service. The seller is also including the original metric-denominated wheels, there is also a spare tire on a fifth M-Parallel wheel. “M” badges on the grille and trunk lid (without “635CSi”) indicate that this is a special E24. On the rear, the trunk lid spoiler and two chrome exhaust tips further the sport feel, as does the lip up front. Grey side striping is tasteful and complementary.
The interior highlight is the reupholstered Recaro heated front seats, with M-striping in red, turquoise and blue. They were recovered in Canadian cowhide. They present very well in the photo gallery and are equipped with power controls for recline and lumbar functions. The car is well-optioned, including a/c as well as power: windows, door locks, antenna, steering and brakes. The three-spoke steering wheel fronts a gauge package that includes speedometer, odometer, trip odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge as well as various warning lights – there is also an “M” badge in the cluster and M-striping on the steering wheel. Other electronics include an aftermarket JVC head unit and factory trip computer. The owner has the original BMW AM/FM/cassette head unit and it will accompany the car to its new owner
The performance of this car is its real story. No slouch to begin with, this car had its engine rebuilt 25,000 km ago, in 2012. We list some of the highlights here but the authoritative source for details is the document prepared by the seller as included in the photo gallery, starting at image 62; it includes a short profile of the mechanic who carried out the build. His name is Marcus Glarner and he is a noted BMW Motorsport mechanic, particularly for his work on BMW M1 engines, the M88.
