2021 06 09 CCC Featured External Listing – 1966 Chrysler New Yorker
This 1966 Chrysler New Yorker is in excellent aesthetic condition for a 55-year-old sedan. The owner claims the 44,000 miles on the odometer are original and that the car has been garaged all its life; to boot, adding to the story is a period dealer badge affixed to the trunk lid. This car comes from an era of arguably the most famous Lincoln Continental and the Imperial Crown, styling cues from each are evident. While the Imperial was a Chrysler product and the similarities are intuitive, the Lincoln was a competitor – though Chrysler did not deny its influence on the New Yorker’s styling. Peeling back the layers of the onion, it was plausible: the designer of the New Yorker had handled the same task for the Continental.

In 1965, Chrysler began using its C-body unibody platform. While a front subframe was bolted on, the unibody construction was rare at the time. Standard of the day was body-on-frame assembly. This example comes with original style wheel covers and black paint, for a formal look of distinction when considered with the four headlight and wide slat taillight designs. Chrome-appointed mouldings, lower side panels and bumpers complete the look.
This seventh-generation New Yorker is a four-door sedan, distinguished from the hardtop by the B-pillars and window frames; hardtop two-doors were also on offer in 1966 while the wagon became its own Town & Country model.   The 7th-gen began with the successful 1965 model; for 1966 revisions included a new grille, taillights and trim detail. The big news was the Firepower 440 cubic inch V8 engine, producing between 350 and 365 horsepower.

This car presents as well-equipped, with power windows and driver side mirror adjustable by mechanical remote. Keen observers will note window cranks on the front door cards, which are for the triangular-paned vent windows. The large diameter steering wheel frames a half-circle horn control and fronts a similarly-themed 120 mph speedometer. An AM radio and analog clock are incorporated into the dash, whose top appears free of cracking. Separate HVAC controls are under-dash.
The front bench in two-tone blue is vinyl with cloth inserts. Photos show lap belts for the front passengers. It can be divided by folding arm rest and is complemented by the same set up for rear passengers. Reflective of the times, rear seat passengers are even treated to their own dedicated cigarette lighter.Â
The engine bay looks tidy for its age. Using the photos as a reference, the distributor and spark plug wires appear to be newer additions. The air cleaner also presents as a clean unit. The painted valve covers of the big 440 complete the picture of a visually-pleasing set-up. Out back, the uncovered trunk adds to peace of mind about the condition of the body. Further peace of mind is provided by the Ontario safety standards certificate that comes along with the car.
