2022 03 22 Featured External Listing – 2008 BMW M3 Coupe 6-speed manual

Here is a low-mileage 2008 BMW M3 6-speed manual.  The E92 (coupe, as seen here) and E93 (cabriolet) M3s are considered by many to be a collectible in the future.  This is so because they were built with a V8 engine, the only generation to be so equipped in the vaunted M3’s history; a lesser attribute to add to the collectability is that it is the last M3 coupe and cabriolet, before the release of the 4-series.  The 4.0 litre is factory-rated at an eye-catching 414 horsepower and was available in the M3s from 2007 – 2013, though the E90 sedan and E91 wagon were released for the 2006 model year.  The 2006 M3 was the last year of the E46, equipped with a more traditional 3-series inline six making 333 horsepower.

The finish on this car is a brilliant blue, with the big M3 wheels a dynamic complement, though we are not sure if they are 18” or 19” – both sizes were offered when the car was new.  The carbon fibre roof is a performance feature.  Most think of it as a weight savings and they are right.  But even more important in our eyes is that the lighter roof lowers the car’s centre of gravity – both are handy for track days.  The seller is the car’s third owner but claims no winters for this car, the mileage makes this plausible, and that there is no rust.

Inside, the interior features BMW’s iDrive system.  It is somewhat maligned, but we find it easy to live with when one gets used to it.  Another tech note:  the car is equipped with park distance sensors.  The M3 has an upgraded Dakota leather on its seats – grey heated sport seats in this case – from the standard 3-series leather or even leatherette.  The dash is all business, BMW had its M3 dash mastered from the start, beyond the standard issue 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel.  Brushed aluminum trim inside differentiates this M3 from the faux woodgrain in most 3-series.

Getting the 414 horsepower to the rear wheels is a six-speed manual gearbox, known as one of the smoothest-shifting in the industry.  Torque checks in at 295 lb.-ft.  All of this equates to performance in the range of 4.7 seconds in the 0-60 romp and a top speed of 155 mph – this in car weighing in at approximately 3700 lbs.

The car is said to be unmodified.  Although the seller is this car’s third custodian, he does note 5,000 km oil change intervals.  If he can show that previous owners also observed this and with synthetic, it is a good bellwether for the V8.  Recent maintenance includes throttle actuators.  Not done to date and considered by the seller as a common issue in this car are the rod bearings.  While not foolproof, seller indicates that oil samples support this job not needing doing at this time.  He also mentions a recent shop inspection and a Carfax on hand – both items we would want to review if considering this rig.
