The Commando was a well-known and popular bike in its time, leading to the following it enjoys today. It was also well decorated, being awarded “Machine of the Year” by Motor Cycle News an impressive five years running, from 1968 through 1972.
The engine in this example has been rebuilt. Same goes for the four-speed chain transmission. Common for extensive rebuilds is for the rebuilder to reset the odometer. In this case, while the rebuild process was indeed exhaustive, the odometer reading of zero is attributable to new gauges having been installed during the rebuild process. As such, we must market this machine as TMU – true mileage unknown.

The seller also suggested we mention a taste of pop culture to add to the fun of this auction. Actor Keanu Reeves rode his early ’70s Commando 750 from Toronto to Florida in 1990 to hand-deliver Gus Van Sant’s script for the movie “My Own Private Idaho” (1991) and convince the late River Phoenix. The film went on to wide critical acclaim. (Source: Cycle World)
Longtime motorcycle enthusiast Reeves has gone on to greater heights in the motorcycle industry, co-founding Arch Motorcyles in 2011.
